It's common to see questions like "How do I post an image?", "Where do I host my sig pic?" or "I have a huge picture, but I want to reduce it to post or use as my sig."

Images to be displayed on the Internet have to reside on a server connected to the Internet (meaning if it's on your computer, we can't see it).

Imgur seems like a good option for those that don't already own their own web space. Once you upload your images there they are visible to people on the Internet.

Once you've got your image uploaded, to post the image the first thing you need to know is the image's URL. The URL is the full address of the image on the Internet and looks like: http://forumcdn.calgarypuck.com/imag...lies/wink2.gif

On Imgur, the URL is given to you for each image when you view your album. If you can see an image and want to know it's URL, you can often right click on the image, click Properties and the URL will be given.

Once you know your image's URL, you can post it to the forum. To do this you have to type (or copy and paste) the URL into your post, and surround it with the image tags. So while typing your post it would look something like:
Code:
[img]http://i.imgur.com/QLBhjdq.gif[/img]
The forum software sees those image tags and replaces them with the actual image you want to post.

To resize images, I found a couple of free utilites that allow you to do it if you don't have any image editing software already installed on your computer.

http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/

http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm

http://www.virtualzone.de/files/?product=resizer

If anyone has anything to add or knows of a good program, post it here.

I guess you could, though the resize isn't very effective (it doesn't use a good algorithm to do it and looks poor).

I was having issues with my sig image showing up as an URL instead of the image. With some troubleshooting I found that the problem was that I had used an amperstand in the file name of the image (which is usually not a problem in HTML, but must have confused the parser). Just wanted to post here in case any one else had the same problem and was looking for help.

photobucket now has an image resizer you can utilize too. Different options for different venues. For example I think one choice is for internet message board or something like that.

Sorry, I'm new on here and am just trying to figure out how to get my 'animated' avatar to work. Is it the same concept as above (posting an image)? I have it in Photobucket right now, but I can't seem to enter a URL that is valid when I try to use it for my avatar. I tried to load the image off of my computer (where the animation works fine), but the animation won't work on here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot . . .

Weird, a few people have animated ones no prob. Avatars are hosted on the forum server, so yeah the upload image should work fine; as far as I know the server doesn't change anything.

Does that animated avatar work on your computer if you open it from your computer with firefox? I've seen animated gifs that weren't coded properly that would work in a preview in Windows but not work in a browser.

I uploaded it to Photobucket and it works fine there . . . I know, it's weird, but I'm not sure what I need to do to make it work here. Does it have anything to do with the HTML code being on or off?

Did you do anything special with yours, or did it just work? Did you load it off your computer, or off of another website?

Nope, just uploaded it off my computer.

What's the link to it on photobucket?

Ah that's why, the hosted image is too big pixel-wise, so the board software is resampling it down to meet the 80x80 pixel size limit, and the resampling doesn't know how to deal with an animated gif, it just picks the 1st frame.

Resample it down to 80x80 and you should be good.

Aaahhh . . . I was wondering about that. Makes sense - I'll give that a try. Hey, thanks a lot for your help, I really appreciate it! Especially on a night when . . .well, let's just say, the outcome wasn't what we had in mind.

That's not the URL to the image, notice there's no filename before the ".gif"

Another board that I frequent, automatically resizes all images posted in threads to like 640 pixels or whatever. There is a bar at the top of the image that says "click here to see full size" and it opens in a new tab. It is amazing and I wish that it existed here. That site is also powered by vbulletin I believe.

They also have a "who quoted me" feature which is exactly what it sounds like. And is also amazing.

Just a thought. Cheers.

The resizing thing only works well if the you actually upload the images to the site; we don't do that here as the bandwidth incurred would be huge. There might be plugins to do it through javascript but that would just make the image look smaller (and thereby crappy), it wouldn't actually resize it.

The other one looks interesting, I'll take a look.

It can't, no one has the ability to attach images, we don't allow people to upload images to the server.

You have to upload the image to Imgur or something similar as per the details above.
