It rings true but anything can happen if you work harder. Dark horse runs happen all the time in sports. Hard work can beat Talent.
I have to push back on this. I 100% am happy with Conroys assessment and trading. However "Just get in and you might win the cup" almost never happens. The 2012 Kings and the 2019 Blues are the only teams outside of the top 10 to have done it in 18 years.

That said, make the playoffs and show the young players what it is about is a sustainable goal.

Flames strength of schedule coming up is pretty tame.

I am 50/50 on them making playoffs.

The Flames aren't buying and sold their UFAs
Why not cheer for a miracle run? It's just a game, have some fun

For real. Hope isn’t a strategy

Fans can hope and cheer, management can't.

In before the “but our draft position…” whiners chime in. I’ll never understand cheering for losses. Losing creates losers

Winning the cup is the ultimate but lots of teams aspite to just make a splash and get some of that sweet PO dough. Which is where the profits lie.

Flames just got two important leg chairs kicked out from underneath them in the Hanifin and Tanev trades. Somehow they are still balancing well enough that they went out and beat Tampa convincingly in their own barn.

Who knows if the Flames will continue to win or not. What they are doing is surprising me. Instead of rolling over and playing dead, this team is showing a tonne of heart and swagger out there. They are not backing down from anyone. This is an entertainment business after all, and they are providing me with a lot of entertainment.

I had a passing thought about Kotkaniemi maybe being a trade option for CGY after the Canes got Kuznetsov.

But the deadline has come and gone

Now I really know you are connected to the Flames. This paragraph sums up the management style perfectly.

Elite Iginla is a pretty bid difference maker, he was up there as best player in the league.

Conroy should be proud of how he handled his first trade deadline being at the helm. All of our UFAs are dealt with, got a boatload of assets and even 2 new impactful forwards and didn’t cave to whatever the lesser offer was for Markstrom. Most importantly he didn’t spend any assets on rentals.

Gonna give him a B+ on the day, trading Markstrom for a good return would have made it an A

Cheering for a miracle run is fine. It shouldn't be management's objective in my opinion.

Those two players are pretty big differences, but anything can happen. As you suggest hard work can beat talent, but better talent with an equal work rate usually prevails in the long run, and that is what tends to happen when teams up their intensity in the playoffs. Might as well take a run at Vegas though,as the difference may be missing the playoffs and picking 16th in the draft or passing Vegas and likely picking 17th. If what is said about Hanifin and his agent, it wouldn’t be a bad thing seeing him leave Vegas with a bridge burning behind him.

As an aside, not a frequent poster or viewer, but whoever THYA you are, you certainly have helped keep things lively around this place. Tune out the critics and stay in the light.

I'd rather have tij, catton or Lindstrom then hope for a miracle run but it is what it is I guess.

It's not their objective but they also aren't going to throw the towel in and say it's acceptable to lose games. This poisons the well.

Canucks blew it by not signing Kessel for the memes. Losing Kuzmenko and then not signing Kessel... vibes are low.

The wells dry.

We have one deep run in 20 years and we're not poised for one soon(outside of a miracle)
