Pumped about Gausman, thought it sounded like he was staying out west somewhere. Sure helps having a good team with a very bright future, a lot easier to attract some big UFAs.
Scherzer would be nice, but 40+ mil a year is a massive ticket. Wowzers.

What a day of signings. Hard to keep up with the chaos.

That's the strange thing. You're walking into a rats nest of drama, morons and quite frankly just an overall level of insanity that is deeply embedded within the culture of that organization. Man the Dodgers gave up A LOT for him. Enjoying this off season. Lot's of surprise moves already.

Some big names off the board.
The Yanks have been awfully quiet so far. I'm thinking they're going to make a splash in the next day or two and land a Ray or Correa(or both).
With Semien gone I'd like the Jays to take a run at Trevor Story. I think he can be had a little bit of discount and maybe even a show me deal.
What a fun offseason so far.

I think Correa is undoubtedly a Yankee. That seems like the perfect fit. Correas infinitely sized ego suits that organization well.

So if Ray signs elsewhere (which is likely) the Jays essentially replace him with Gausman which is a pretty even swap on paper, but they also end up getting an extra pick out of it as well because no pick was attached to signing Gausman, while the Jays will get a pick whenever Ray ends up signing.
They also get a pick from Texas after the Semien signing today.
Pretty smart business by the Jays FO.
The more I think about it, I hope they are targeting Carlos Rodon now. There is a ton of upside with him if he stays healthy, but he won't require a huge contract and also doesn't have a pick attached to him. He'd also add another lefty to the rotation after losing Matz and probably Ray this off season.

Better that than the Yankees or Red Sox, or any AL team really.

It's pretty bonkers to think a 37 year old Scherzer makes more than Mike Trout.
He's going to get paid ~1.3 million per start next year. That's if he stays healthy.
Just some massive money being handed out today. I guess any concerns over the CBA really didn't impact the Free agent market.

Max Scherzer owes Steven Matz a Rolex.

I like Max and all but there must’ve been some heavy competition for him to demand $43M and get it. Wow. It’s quite the contract to get for an old guy, as good as he is. You could sense the Mets owner growing more and more frustrated and deciding to explode on one guy. Pretty funny all in all.

The other interesting thing about the Scherzer deal is Degrom has an opt out after this season. If he's his dominate self, and can stay healthy, what will the Mets have to pay him to stick around 50 Million AAV?
As it stands now between Scherzer, Degrom, Cano and Lindor is 140 million in salary for 2022. That's more than 22 teams entire payrolls from 2021. I can't wrap my head around these numbers lol.

That’s wild. And as other have pointed out, they’re probably not serious contenders. I’d have to think the owner will probably spend more on free agents this year to make sure they are in contention. If I’m a free agent and looking to cash in I’m calling my agent to knock on that owners door because he’s desperate.

Wow. That one did come out of left field. Pitching is always good but the Mariners can't hit the ball worth a damn. Curious signing.
The AL West is spending a ton of money.

That Scherzer contract is ridiculous: $43M per year is crazy town.
Also that likely means that Ray signing with Seattle wasn’t due to money, must have just preferred Seattle as a location.

Interesting almost the same contract as Gausman. Makes me wonder if the Jays see more upside in Gausman than Ray. Or maybe Robbie simply wanted to go back to the states.

Reasonable term for the guy. Looks like he’s betting on himself with that opt out option. Seattle is one of those teams that will nag and nag so I do understand the signing. If I’m any team I’d build through pitching first, so I like this move on their end.

Cold hard business move by the Jays, if true.
Safe to say it came down to the compensatory pick, and they saw a similar quality pitcher in Gausman? $5M difference in total contract I'd have been hard pressed to not go forward with Ray if I was the Jays FO.
