I assume teams submit wish lists for home game nights.
If they do, I bet their first priority would be what nights are best for selling tickets, not what nights are best for catching a tired team.

No.

Not even geographical science can save the Edmonton Oilers.

Not applied cartography. Not aviation science.

No peer-reviewed science can.

No one.

This gives some insight to the schedule, a few years old:

It actually sounds like it is made manually.

League felt guilty of not handing them another #1 overall, so they softened their schedule

Of course it can. The season itself is random, there's tonnes of different factors from injuries to hot streaks to trades and a million other things. That's why you play 82, because over a large sample size those things tend to even out. Complaining about the schedule is stupid.

You said the schedule was random. Just after you went on about the variables that go into scheduling.

The point of the chart was that, over 82 games, things didn't even out.

There is one of the ESPN 30 for 30 Shorts that went over the couple that used to make the MLB schedules manually. Pretty impressive when you hear all the factors they needed to consider. They did get replaced by computers a few years ago. Not sure if NHL has switched or not.

No good! Even a four time champion says as much.

Players shouldn’t say things like that about teams. But Oilers are so sad that players can’t contain themselves.

I remember years ago HNC did a segment on the guy that did it manually (on a board with movable tiles). Basically he was looking for road trips that made sense logistically.

I suspect the inputs (building availability, required games versus the three types of opponent, home v. road games, promiximity of one road game to another) are as simple now as they were then, just possibly by computer. Except the video I saw might have been under a balanced schedule.

The Oilers have officially handcuffed then selves with not only signing good players, but re-signing their own!

With $4.98 mil to sign Darnell Nurse, it is unlikely that Edmonton will be able to get anything more than a few years out of Nurse, or so says his agent.

Man and for a second there last year I was worried the Oilers would be good haha

Its interested that some oiler fans both on line and the ones that I've talked to (While holding my nose closed with clothespins so I can avoid the stench of loser). have started turning on McDavid's contract and asking, why did Taveres as a UFA sign for a million and a half less, why did Kucherov sign for 3 million less?

They're looking at the abyss caused by a GM that can't negotiate contracts very well and they're realizing that they're pretty much going to be a one line team forever.

I predict that if McDavid isn't dragging that team to a playoff position by Jan, that the Oilers fanbase are going to start turning on him.

They won't tolerate another season where the strategy late in the season is lets win Connor a scoring title so he'll feel better about himself.

Is Nurse eligible to sign an offer sheet? If so, this situation might just lead up to that

If ever there was a time for a team to put together an offer sheet, this is it.
Not even for the fact of sticking it to the Oilers, because they've already stuck it to themselves, but because you could quite literally get a good young defenseman with potential, on a good quality contract for almost nothing.

Oilers currently have $4,978,834 in cap space, with 21 contracts; 13 forwards, 6 D and 2 Goalies.
They need to bring in another body, and from most account, Oiler fans have Yamamoto pencilled in, he carries a cap hit of $894,166.00
If the Oilers can't move anyone out, they have $4,084,668 available to sign Nurse. I'm sure they'd also like to have a little room incase of minor injuries, so they can call up a player, so knock off another $800K, and they have $3,284,668 left over for Nurse.

Another team could offer Nurse a 3 year deal worth $12,177,966, which is an AAV of $4,059,322, the upper limit for an offer that carries a single second round pick as compensation, and the Oilers would have a very hard time matching. If you want to be sure of it, an offer with a $4.9M AAV carries a compensation of a first and third, which for a young top 4 dman isn't terrible.

If only New Jersey hadn't traded their 3rd round pick to the Oilers for Maroon. They could have had Hall and Nurse for Larsson, a first and a third.

I am not so sure about that. Every Oiler fan I talked to had a first class ticket on that train.

It would be absolutely beautiful if Chiarelli loses a young defenseman with upside to an offer sheet, after allegedly wanting to pull the move on Hamilton.

If Boston wasn't cap strapped I imagine they would have made an offer, for that reason alone.

I doubt that any teams will make a offer sheet, but I would love to see it.

The wrench in the works regarding an offer sheet for Nurse is just that he isnt worth it.

Nurse is third pairing player who plays top minutes or second pairing minutes because Edmonton really doesnt have a choice.

I wouldnt sacrifice any assets to overpay that guy, hes borderline useless.

He has 47 NHL points.

When they say that Edmonton only has ~$5M in cap space that should be far more than enough to lock up Nurse.
