Think it's just a 3% chance of moving up ten spots if you're out of the top ten.

Yep.

I really wanted Zary going into that draft, and REALLY didn’t want them to take Schneider. I got exactly what I wanted…and was 100% wrong about Schneider. I still think Zary was good a pick, but Schneider was definitely a good pick by NYR

It looks like they’re currently 22nd - they have a 3% chance of launching themselves to 1st overall (32nd), and a 3.3% chance of launching themselves to 2nd overall (31st).

We’re currently the “last” team to be part of the Bedard sweepstakes, although we’re right “behind” Detroit and if we catch them our chances improve to 3.5% and 3.8%.

As of today on total points earned the Flames %’s breakdown like:

1st Overall: 3.0%
2nd Overall: 3.3%
11th Overall: 79.9%
12th Overall: 13.4%
13th Overall: 0.5%

Detroit plays Philly today - I’m hoping for an OTW for the Red Wings!

Even if they drafted the same player? they would probably have buried him in the AHL

There's a ton of skill in Calgary's pick range...Not happy with the season, but very glad they didn't move their 1st in this draft year

8. Nate Danielson, C, WHL

9. Oliver Moore, C, USA U-18

10. Colby Barlow, LW, OHL

11. Ryan Leonard, RW, USA

12. Dalibor Dvorsky, C, AIK

13. David Reinbacher, RD, EHC.

14. Axel Sandin Pellikka, RD, Fin

15. Andrew Cristall, LW, WHL

16. Brayden Yager, C, WHL

17. Danil But, LW, Rus

18. Gabriel Perreault, RW, USA

19. Riley Heidt, C WHL

20. Matthew Wood, C/LW, (NCAA)

https://thehockeywriters.com/2023-nh...february-2023/

I would love any of these guys, but the guys bold seems to provide the Flames a bit more skill and/or speed at the forward position... Crisal, Richie, Yager and Brindley all sound pretty appealling based on other mock drafts....

A couple mock drafts had Flames selecting Yager, thoughts from those following the draft closely?

If the Flames are in the 13-15 range, it may be an opportunity to draft a top pair dman, which is badly needed in the pipeline. The draft is very forward heavy, but there are a couple of guys with top pairing upside:
Sandin Pellikka
Reinbacher

If they end up in the 10-11 range, I'd love to see them get Dvorsky there.

Adding Poirier is a good piece of business.

And I think people are a little more high on Boltmann now too no? Not emerging prospect level, but less of a wasted pick level?
Don't see anything from Boltmann that says he'll even get a contract. I still don't know why they spent a third round pick on a high school player who didn't even have eye popping stats. He should have been a 6th or 7th rounder dart throw.

This thread about to get very busy over the next few months, if they draft 10th or later I would be for trading back again. I imagine a few teams will wan’t to jump up this year.

No need to trade back. Not this draft. No way.

Generally agree. The strength of this draft is in the top tier, and then the second tier that runs into the mid-teens.
Dropping into the 20s basically puts you into the part of the draft that isn't that much different than every draft.

After taking a first look through the range in where we’re likely picking, my first hopeful pick is Brayden Yager.

Speed, hands, shot…everything looks good there. Right shot centre? Beautiful. From Sask, so a good chance he’d feel good about being in AB.

some fans want homerun swings with picks; imo, that is exactly what the Flames did with Poirier and Boltmann.

I think Boltmann has some very good attributes; excellent skater, good passing, very physical, good penalty killer. People who may never have seen him play look at his numbers and wonder what is there. He plays for a team whose top scorer has 8 goals. He's not going to put up numbers on this team. For those who want homerun swings, you got to accept the strikeouts

We got Huberdeau for next 8 years, he plays left side on the PP and likes feeding one timers to the right side. We do not have a single lefty in the organization that specializes in one timers. I do not like drafting for positional need but we severely lack a one timer threat on the PP

When in doubt, Flames tend to favour centres and blueliners.

My main fear if Tre moves on is that they’ll revert to Sutter’s draft philosophy

Is that true? There's such a huge dropoff from the mid-teens to the 20s that it reverts to a typical draft?

I've read that a good second round pick (like 42, maybe the one the Flames will have) is as good as a mid-late first round pick in a normal draft. I'm hoping for a Pelletier level prospect from the 2nd round pick.

I think that's where the over-hype is.
The deeper you go in any draft the more they normalize. So for instance, there is no way a pick in the 40s is a good as a pick in the 20s of a normal draft. That doesn't mean there won't be good players there, because there will be.

By the time you get into the late 1st and early 2nd, a pick there might be 2-4 slots better than normal, and then it will normalize further as you go on.

Again, its a good draft for the following reasons:
- Incredible #1 overall pick. Potential generational
- Another 3 guys that would go first overall most years
- Another tier of about 10 guys that are better than most years.

It's not about the depth. It's about the guys available in the first half of the first round.
