http://www.abbotsfordheat.com/genera...article_id=842
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat announced today that they have signed forward Coda Gordon to a contract.
Gordon, a native of Cochrane, Alberta, played in 59 games with the Swift Current Broncos (WHL) this season, and registered a career high of 71 points (26-45-71) and 34 penalty minutes. Gordon was selected in the sixth round (165th overall) by the Calgary Flames in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Yea, I was kinda expecting this to happen.
The Flames did the same thing with Spencer Bennett, but never signed him to an ELC. Hopefully Gordan can earn one.

The only player left from the 2012 draft who must be signed by the Flames prior to June 1. Hope he can show the team that he's worth the commitment.
He was more than a point per game player in the WHL as a 19 year-old. Many players in the past have received NHL contracts who never accomplished that.

Going to be tough for this kid to earn a contract, you would think.
There can and likely will be several changes between now and when next season starts.....but as it stands right now, he is going to have a ton of competition for not only ice time, but just a plain and simple roster spot on the Heat next season.
Curtis Glencross - Mikael Backlund - Jiri Hudler
Paul Byron (RFA) - Sean Monahan - Joe Colborne (RFA)
Lance Bouma (RFA) - Matt Stajan - David Jones
TJ Galiardi (RFA) - ??????????? - Brian McGrattan
Sven Baertschi - Markus Granlund - Max Reinhart
Michael Ferland - Corban Knight - Josh Jooris
John Gaudreau (Assumed) - Bill Arnold (Assumed) - Ben Hanowski (RFA)
Kenny Agostino - Turner Elson - Bryce VanBrabant
David Wolf (Rumored)
That's all the forwards we have that are:
A) Under contract (16)
B) RFA's and likely to get qualified (5)
C) Likely or rumored to sign (3 - Gaudreau, Arnold, Wolf)
Not very many spots open, and that doesn't count any other free agents forwards that might sign here, and doesn't count any AHL guys on PTO's either.
It also doesn't count for the potential of "wild card" junior guys like Poirier, Klimchuk or our 2014 1st round pick eeking out an NHL roster spot.
Thick competition, so Gordon is obviously going to have to really impress IMO.

The Flames did not sign him Abbotsford did. So what does it mean if the Calgary does not sign him by June 1st? Is this mean he is going back to the draft or to free agency?

If the Flames don't sign by June 1st he goes back to the draft. If no one selects him in the draft he becomes an UFA.

He's on an ATO with Abbotsford which covers the remainder of the regular season and playoffs.
The Flames still hold his NHL rights until June 1. If he doesn't sign an NHL ELC before then, he'll re-enter the draft. If he gets drafted, he'll become that team's property for two years without signing. If he re-enters the draft and doesn't get chosen, he'll become a free agent and can sign anywhere.
I believe he can also go back to Swift Current for one more year as an overager, but because of his age, if he signs an NHL contract, it will start next season and can't slide like it does for 18 or 19 year-olds.

Except for one small issue.... injuries
26 different forwards laced them up for the Flames this year. I would imagine at least another 20 (excluding overlaps) did so for the Heat. That is at least 10 more spots than what you are suggesting.

Holy crap when did we get so much depth?!
We might have to make an upgrade type of trade pretty soon.
