I don't mind 1 year for this player.
I'm concerned Zedorov will become a whipping boy for fans this year. Especially because Gio is gone and he's essentially the replacement and no where near the player.
(Not his fault but fans will naturally look at it this way with 1 guy out and 1 in).
May be a good thing to have that flexibility of him leaving after a year.
But... it looks like the team is burning another year in mediocrity with the old "it's only 1 year".
We keep saying that every year and it's no longer only 1 year.

3M less cap hit and Gio was trending down
people might change their tune but I think 95% of CP was good with leaving Gio unprotected

But we are a worse hockey team with Zedorov than Gio and very lacking in leadership as well.
A trending down Gio is still twice the player Zedorov is.
I acknowledge there's still off season and cap space to work with and things can change, but as of now we aren't improved.

I'm worried about the room now that Gio is gone. Who's in charge now Backlund?

But the room has sucked for years so a change in the room doesn’t bother me at all.

Maybe with a leadership role Backlund will finally be more consistent but I'd imagine Looch and Tanev will be a big part of that room.

Leadership that had led them to not showing up for almost every big game? Christ they needed to beat the Sens 2 more times to make the playoffs.
Flames are supposedly worse...I wager their point % is better this season
I hope there is more but Coleman improves the team more than anything lost IMO. Zadorov is close to Gio defensively and far more physical. I will give you the offensive loss from the blue line as it stands. Need a couple young dmen to really step up.

This deal is just ok, I’m not a huge Zadarov fan but this gives us a one year look at him.

I am okay taking a wait and see approach with Zadorov but so far not a great look to trade a 3rd for a 1 year contract at 3.75. Doubt Zadorov can play more than a 4/5 role. Best case scenario, he flourishes under Sutter and finds another few steps

I keep reading this sentiment all over these boards and wonder where it comes from.
He has been, for years, a solid second pairing guy on whatever team he was on.. Why does that change because he is in Calgary?
There is no offense with him...no question. That doesnt mean he isnt valuable enough to play big minutes against the other teams better players and be pasting them along the boards all while suppressing chances against.

I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the reasons for signing him to a 1year contract is also to leave the door open for Gio returning next season.

Maybe, but Gio is going to be 39 next season. I'd love to see him back but hes not going to be the same Gio.

How much do you think Gio would cost?

If he plays well, he is going to cost 4M+ long term
If he plays badly, he is going to get the similar 1 yr contract or less
I think he is 1 and done unless he shows crazy improvements

I would hope that at this point we are not tailoring our roster with the priority being bringing back a 39 yr old Gio. I love Gio and everything he has done here but that is foolish.

Murphy wears an A for them and they value him more. So yes they didn't value a year of Zadorov at around $3.5-4M(or they could've been afraid of arbitration), but that doesn't mean they don't think highly of Zadorov himself.

Calgary needed to protect the 3 they did, everyone understood that.
Chicago wasn’t protecting any Hanafin type players.
Plus Gio was picked, Zadorov was bypassed for a nothing type player. Seattle presumably passed as they didn’t want to pay him what it would take.

Mindsets of NHL head offices are changing. Cap flexibility is more important than worrying about a player leaving via UFA.
Zadorov has bounced around quite a bit in his young career. If he finds a home under Sutter and has a good year there will be plenty of incentive for him to stay and the Flames have the ability to work out an extension then.
It’s a good trial for both the team and the player to see how the fit is. If it doesn’t work out, no biggie as you have the space again next off season.
