Default Calgary Stampede Centennial Advertising Campaign

The Calgary Stampede is going in an interesting direction promoting next year's centennial: http://www.calgarysun.com/2011/11/01...ntennial-drive

Quote:
The Calgary Stampede’s gone Manhattan while recruiting a cable TV black-hat to sell its centennial year.

A promotional video narrated by Jonathan Banks, who plays drug gang enforcer Mike in AMC network’s hit series Breaking Bad has surfaced on the popular humour website funnyordie.com

And a cartoon depicting a rodeo animal’s revenge is featured in the New Yorker magazine.
Yes, the Stampede is being promoted on Funny or Die: http://www.funnyordie.com/topic/calgary-stampede

Full video here: http://FunnyOrDie.com/m/6642

This seems like a pretty risky advertising campaign and I hope it works well for the Stampede. Although the Stampede is about much more than just rodeo and chuckwagons, most of the advertisements you see typically play up those old western themes.

Sounds like some young ad exec said the magic words to the Stampede Council.

"We'll go VIRAL!"

Meh, didn't really do it for me. They were trying to pull off a darker theme but it really wasn't shot that way at all.

You know what would have been great for the Centennial? Having the Stampede Trail development done and ready, guess we'll just keep waiting on that...

Did anyone notice the change in audio when they showed the wide shot of the city and Mike said "The Calgary Stampede"? It was like it was added during a different recording session and sounded different from the rest of the audio. Kind of amateurish.

Yeah too much of a gap between concept & execution on this. The actor at stampede & all the camera work just didn't jive with the "hardened cowboy kicks back with a corndog" juxtaposition they were trying to achieve.

The character they had walking around comes across like more of a goof than a badass & the mood was too light hearted, came across as pretty bush.

Not sure who's handling the Stampede's marketing, but the last 2 years (2010-2011) have both been underwhelming compared to 2009's Comedown Getaway campaign.

Bad idea for the centennial. Really should be focused on tradition, Alberta, family, 100 years, yadda yadda yadda. Pull at the heartstrings.

Where do you start with that garbage? I guess with the negatives...

1. Shot at a time when almost no one was on the grounds (I'm guessing on purpose to make shooting easier) making Stampede look like a little small town fair

2. Shot the rodeo stuff with only two shots of the crowd, The first shot being of a sparse crowd on the small eastside stands, and the other of a 100% EMPTY grandstand (I guess shot during practice or something, again likely to make shooting easier and AGAIN making it look like NOBODY actually attends the stampede

3. Didn't show ANYTHING outside the grounds, even though the majority of awesomeness at stampede is the fact that the whole city gets behind it and parties. You know, that may be something you want to get out there if you're trying to get people to travel all the way here. Because no ones F-ing going to plan a trip based on seeing some a-hole do a poor acting job in an empty stampede grounds. FFS.

Even those first two negatives would completely ruin the whole point of shooting a promotional commercial, but unfortunately, those are just the start of the negatives for that garbage.
