Clive is alright but imo not as good as five guys

Naina’s? It’s goes to show how recent you know of the place because it’s been rebranded as “n9na”. Despite this, their prices are up there with any other pub with their stuffed burger is nearly $20.

If you’re going to use N9na as a comparison, you may as well include every pub in the area with burgers as their offering. Fast casual food is significantly cheaper than restaurants

Yes, 10 min walking is too far away when that’s all you have in mission and especially with winter coming up

Yeah 5 guys is fast food. So the local competition would have been Burger Inn and A&W. One wonders if the A&W moving in is what did them in.
But I suspect it's the usual formula for failure: high lease+high property taxes.
The same reasons why a bunch of places are closing up.

It’s this right here that always has me confused as to how ‘Cookies By George’ still stays afloat in the malls.

Purlieu Bistro in Oakridge - fantastic. Bistro food with Chinese influence. Love their duck confit cassoulet. Does not hurt that I can put as much wine as I want and walk home.

Looks like Ox Bar De Tapas on 17th is closed now

Can't find anything official from the restaurant but opentable no longer accepting reservations

That's a shame. I've spent a few nights after Flames games drinking cocktails there!

I was dining there the night the flood started in 2013. We kept hearing reports that water was creeping up 4th Street. We thought these reports must be exaggerated and kept blissfully drinking wine. Later, my Sled Island show at Republik was moved to the Palace. When I emerged, the power was out and downtown was dark.

I guess one place I'd consider relatively hidden is Stromboli Inn. I do like being able to stroll up and sit down to my favorite pizza anytime (except for their excessively long winter break shutdowns), but at the same time a bit more traffic would make me feel better about them sticking around for the long haul.

oh and Begim (Uzbeki on international ave), same thing. nice to have an easy table but they deserve more customers for sure.

edit: one more, Katsuten for...katsu. they seem to have fairly steady patrons so maybe not too secret, but not yet at the point where showing up without a reso is utterly futile. very addictive crunchy stuff.
Nicely done for coming up with Begim. Not many say "Oooo, I'm craving some Uzbeki cuisine today". We tried it once and loved it. But, wow, it was a "heavy" meal. Couldn't do it too regularly.

Their menu is incomplete and most dishes don't include a description... Can you describe Uzbeki cuisine? Seems like a sort of hybrid of Greek and Persian ??

it's probably easier to google pictures of Uzbek food, but I guess I'd describe it as hybrid Persian/Turkish with a touch of Eastern Europe/Russia mixed in. and yes the portions can be intimidating, so best to bring 4 people and share a few dishes.

If you want to check out some hidden gems - go through the mish mash of businesses in the Westwinds Business Park area. I was doing a tour through there (for planning issues) with the local City Councillor today and we stopped by Afghan Kabob for some lunch. Amazing.

Aside from the Kabob platter, had this amazing dumpling type dish. Fantastic.

Lots of cool places in this area.

I don't know about them, but FYI just because opentable no longer accepts reservations doesn't necessarily mean the restaurant is closed, it might mean they decided to ditch opentable and the $1.35/person (yes, per person) fee they have to pay opentable for reservations. Maybe in an effort to stay open.

Jesus. Make the area walkable and people still complain.

I know Naina's changed their name. I didn't really care.

5 Guys was hardly cheap, especially if you can't share fries.

And Clive is better than 5 Guys. Your taste buds are broken.

And wait you think Holy Grill is greasy compared to 5 Guys? So I take it you've never actually eaten 5 Guys?

Every single one of these points just tells me you don’t live downtown and have no idea what you’re talking about

Man, Ox & Angela was one of my favourite Calgary restaurants (3rd behind Anju and Model Milk).

I’ve gone there all the time, as well as the deerfoot meadows location too. Not nearly as greasy as what holy grill offers. Have you even set foot at any 5 guys either?

Is $10 for a double patty burger “hardly cheap”? They also still give massive amounts of fries on their small and regular orders. Completely meant for sharing.

Again, rethink your comparisons. 5 guys is fast casual food. N9na is not

Wanted to give a shout out to Purlieu Bistro in Oakridge. For those of us in that Anderson/24th/90th/14th quadrangle, I think it is by far the best "nice" restaurant, and worth a drive even if you live elsewhere. The head chef is Chinese, so it is a nice fusion of French with Chinese influence - kind of reminds me of the French Quarter in Shanghai, though that's more Chinese with French influence.

Anybody have a suggestion for a decent restaurant close to the airport? Driving my wife after work and her flight got delayed so we have some time to kill.

There's a Cactus Club on Barlow up near the airport which has some pretty tasty food.
