I'm a little confused because in the article they also say this:

Quote:
WestJet said it is participating in the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program and said the pilots will be placed on an inactive status and will remain on payroll while the program is in effect.

So are they laid off, or inactive? Or is that for a different group?

Possible they are doing what several companies including mine have done, layoffs but continuing to pay health insurance so people are not completely out in the wind.

They will be inactive until the wage subsidy program ends which will help them out financially, after than they will be layed off. That's my understanding. Unlike some other jobs there is a cost in keeping them after that and it would be more cost effective to rehire than to retain at that point. It's unfortunate. I foresee Air Canada doing the same in the near future as the dust begins to settle.

Currently all their pilots are on a reduced pay guarantee (hours) but even at that they are actually working way fewer hours than they are being paid for which is not sustainable

This could have just as easily been posted in the What Makes Me Happy thread but there isn't a lot of good news in aviation these days so I'm putting it here. It also makes me happy.

Snowbirds will be working their way across the country this summer just because.

The Antonov 225 is about to depart Anchorage for Montreal-Mirabel. Apparently bringing a bunch of medical supplies:

I love that the FlughtRadar24 icon for the Myra has 3 engines per wing.

They do such a good job on those little details.

Nice to see the Cargolux 747 today. Really noticeable with few aircraft in the sky.

I assume it was delivering medical supplies?

I think it's on it's regular scheduled weekly run through YYC. Or at least it was here last Tuesday with a similar routing so I'm assuming this is just a normal flight.

Yup regular service, sometimes we get lucky and the SEA-YYC portion comes in the day like today.

We also had the Nav Canada CRJ buzzing around a couple of hours ago doing work on the instrumentation at the airport.

Monday nights and Friday nights is their actual schedule but they are the most delinquent cargo airline maybe in the history of humanity so daytime visits are common.

Pakistan International Airlines Crash of Flight 8303 22 May 2020
https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-asia-52766904

Quote:
The pilots of flight PK8303, an Airbus A320 carrying 91 passengers and eight crew, were attempting to land at the city's Jinnah International Airport.

The plane had attempted one landing but as it went round again lost its engines and issued a mayday call.

At least two passengers are confirmed to have survived the crash.
Some interesting early analysis, appears on the first landing they damaged the engines because the gear wasn't all the way down.

With all the covid stuff going on, this story has been largely ignored. Pretty terrible chain of events. That was a really good video explanation you included.

Victorville California is currently one of the largest airplane parking lots in the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

You can skip to the 4:00 mark to see when he starts flying over all the planes.

YEG saw the Antinov AN124 three times in the space of 24hours over the weekend. Also Fedex MD11’s have been regular visitors the past few days which is not typical.
