Your scenario of a 1st, 2nd, 3rd all need to be next year's draft. The exception is when you need to give 2+ picks of the same level (i.e. 2 1sts, 4 1sts). So essentially this applies to just the last two tiers of offer sheet compensation:

-$8,454,872 to $10,568,589 for 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd
-$10,568,590+ for 4 1sts

The second highest I think also applies because 2 1sts are required. So the team offersheeting can give 2 1sts from 2 of the 3 following years.3 year window.

If Marner got offersheeted I'd take the 4 firsts then offersheet Tckachuk at 9.5 million x 5. Flames probably match though.

Never say never but I highly doubt any team is considering putting forth an offer sheet that the Flames will not be able to match for this player. If there are any offer sheets this year they will be for Mitch Marner as he's a more dynamic player and the Leafs have cap issues.
Marner didn't exactly have a great playoff either...one more point in three more games. I think some of you read to much into a poor playoff round. Top paid player in the league has missed the playoffs 3 of 4 seasons. Skinner just got 9M and hasn't even played a playoff game.

I am also pro-chaos.

Offersheet nachos. Offersheets layered with offersheets. A nice spicy offersheet salsa on the side!

This would be amazing. Islanders offer-sheet Marner, and TO responds by offer-sheeting Tkachuk, Calgary responds by offer-sheeting Point, TB responds by offer-sheeting Aho.

Imagine if a rogue GM was ok losing 4 1sts for a star and simply started with their favourite target and kept giving out offer sheets until they successfully got their star player. They'd burden a number of other teams (their competitors) and likely get their star player.

Granted it'd come at the cost of a high contract, loss of picks, and bad GM relations...but some teams might view the newly sparked interest worth it to generate better ticket sales. Look at the Hurricanes from last year...they're being talked about a lot more today than last year. Maybe they want to take their jerk motto one step further?? ha

Right, but Marner is still a better target than Tkachuk, I would think.

It would cost more money to get him to actually sign , definitely in four firsts range and not many teams have 12-13M lying around.

Highly doubt we seen any offersheets though just saying playoff performance especially for a 21 year old is not a huge factor in contacts.

Marner will get matched at anything below 10.56 for sure so teams have to be willing to give up 4 1sts and sign Marner to an 11+ million deal.

Like I said would the Flames match Tckacuk at 9.5 million per 5 years? 2 1sts 2nd and 3rd is pretty doable. Especially if you just got 4 firsts from another team.

He was great defensively though. It was impressive to watch, throwing himself in front of pucks and hustling back. He’s a really good player. It’s no wonder he and Tkachuk dominated the OHL.

That was the first game and everyone was going crazy then he pretty much disappeared for the rest of the series.

I agree that playoffs mean squat when signing these young guys to contracts.

I don't disagree...just saying one playoff for a 21 year old doesn't factor much into the contract. I don't think it's likely at all Marner gets an offersheet. What team that he would actually sign with has 12-13M and 4 first lying around?

Matt seems more likely not because he is a better player but because the contract/compensation is lower. He did also put up massive numbers playing with average at best offensive talent on the 2nd line.

I'd offer sheet marner at 10.5x5 for 2 reasons:

1) I think 2 1st's a 2nd and 3rd isn't too bad.

2) I know the leafs would match and if I am in the east you want them spending as much as possible on the shortest term. Otherwise I think it will end in 8 year sub 10 million,

Offer sheet question:

Why do the compensatory picks have to be your own picks?

I am not sure there is an official explanation, but judging from how the League has historically viewed offer sheets I am betting that it is intended as a strong discouragement against using them.

Probably so bad teams don't trade their first round picks to good teams for worse 1st round picks + extra picks/prospects...
