He didn't have a great ending to his season in Calgary, but all things considered he rounds out a defensive group and may be the best bet to keep Giordano in the 60+ point sphere.

Hard to come away from last season with the belief the team can afford to subtract any personnel really. Need to augment, augment, augment.

Having said that, Tre will have to be creative to keep Brodie and sign Tkachuk without moving another big ticket.

The Flames have zero chance to improve in a cap world without subtracting some cap. How do you augment without subtracting some cap?

With one year left on his contract, and the Flames depth on defence, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Brodie stays and the Flames make the necessary improvements to their team.

Strange deal.
Rask is a cap dump? Minny traded Niedereiter for him a few months ago.

This doesn't make much sense for the Wild.

Kessel is good, but why would you trade away two of your few younger players.

Because they have no plan.

you trade more draft picks for middling players that give you the illusion you're more competitive while you steadily lose ground over time to teams around you that continue to draft.

The Flames have moved out a staggering amount of picks in the last 3 years. I expect that to continue to a large degree.

I think the Flames are likely to move out that 1st round pick to grab a middle six winger who can finish and then probably another couple of picks to move out Neal.

IMO if Neal isn't moved it's because there were 0 takers, not because the flames weren't willing to pay the prices out there.

I expected 2-4 draft picks moved out this summer with maybe 2 coming back.

That might mean trading out of the first round for 2x2nds and then moving one or both of those 2nds or it could mean straight across 1st round picks in multiple years.

Like you mentioned, it's tough to improve in a zero sum with cap constraints, but if you can move out stone, neal and frolik for half as much cap coming back, I think there are ways to make it work.

For instance if you're going with cheap goaltending, you're probably going to want to keep as many capable defenders as you can to make it easier on that subpar goaltending.

I'm not good at trades, so I throw this one out there:

Rask + Zucker for Frolik + Brodie

???

I'd take Kessel on my team in heartbeat. This seams too cheap coming from the Wild side to get a speedy point per game right winger?

Brodie and Frolik would be an equivalent salary coming from the Flames for Kessel. Another right shooting forward would be a nice add to the powerplay.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Kessel
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Bennett
Jankowski-Bennett-Neal
Mangiapane-Ryan-Hathaway

Sign me up.

How does that make Calgary a better team?

Not a chance I consider such a move.

and it was an awful, awful trade. Rask has been bad for two straight seasons on two different teams.

Kessel does not excite me at all. He's right at that age where aging top forwards get massively overpaid for underwhelming future performance.

But, on the other hand, he is in phenomenal shape.

Bad trade for sure, but Rask had injury troubles this season and I doubt Wild considers him a cap dump after 23 games for them. He has a good chance of bouncing back and earning that 4 mil per year.

Now i see why Tre was pissed when the deal fell through at the last second. Wild went from getting a 3rd line player and a late 1st to maybe Kessel.

The two organizations are heading in different directions. It could be something related to management or ownership that has Phil reluctant to go to Minnesota. Geography isn't the be all end all upon making decisions on where a person wants to play.
