Default Hatchback Advice

Might as well toss this out to the CP brain trust.

I'm looking to change up my vehicle and go to a hatchback. I've been looking at the Honda Civic as well as the Subaru Impreza. I'm not sold on either, but I want the hatchback to give me more room for larger things compared to my Hyundai Sonata which I can't fit anything of height into the truck. Any and all help is appreciated

I have the Impreza and love it. Fits my bike without any issue if I don't want to attach the rack on the back.

I like the look of the new Nissan Kicks

Also, isn't it obvious that things fit in the Honda Fit? Magic Seat ftw

I've been really happy with the storage in my Toyota Matrix (which is essentially a Hatchback Corolla). I've been able to transport bikes, skis, a 10' ladder and a book case with the hatch closed (but not all at once). I've found the storage space is comparable to an SUV. I tell everyone my car is a dirty little slut, because everything fits inside.

Civics and Corolla's are the best bang for your buck out of the entire automotive industry, so I'd look closely at those before moving on to other models.

i can't speak to honda or subaru, but my wife had a mazda protege 5 and LOVED that car. she actually cried when we traded it in on a brand new larger vehicle (she wanted something bigger since our first kid was on the way at the time).

it really was a great car and having the hatchback... man we could put a lot of stuff in that little car!

The search for hatchbacks begins and ends with the Volkswagen Golf. Nobody does it better.

Disclaimer: I have had two Golfs.

Just make sure there is enough room for you kids to spread out in the back on long trips.

We've had our Impreza for a few years and it's been pretty great. I love the CVT on the highway, not so much in the city but it's not horrible. Probably the thing I hate most is for some reason the rear view mirror is way to low. All that empty space above it is useless for seeing out of. But AWD is soooo nice in the winter.

Well, for the most part it will only be me in it. Maybe one other person or a dog. So gas millage does matter to me but i'm not usually the one driving with a full vehicle

Mazda 3's are fun to drive but get the one with the bigger engine.

And I've never had a AWD vehicle, so that does not play the biggest factor with me (as long as the dealership will toss in some winter tires then i'll be happy camper)

Ah, CP...where a guy can come and ask about a $20 000 car and be given options for $200 000 ones. Only 1 extra zero!

I also have a Matrix. The Corolla hatchbacks go by different names now.

Probably one of the most dependable vehicles on the market. Fuel economy and storage are both fantastic. They are great in snow too.

The downside is that they are zero fun to drive. Since they'll last you about 20 years, you'll probably end up driving a boring car for a long time (or at least I have).

The Corolla hatchback is actually just called a Corolla Hatchback now (formerly Corolla iM, formerly Scion iM).

They are quite attractive too

I have no complaints about the looks. But from someone who has driven one for 8-9 years, they are definitely boring.

My car looks and feels almost new though. It's never needed any kind of major repair (the biggest being battery replacement). The stylings on these vehicles have been great in that they are classic enough to stay in fashion for many years.
