“Rest Areas” in Edmonton centre?

Hey guys,
Sort of a silly question, but hopefully someone can help.
I’m super unfamiliar with Edmonton, so is anyone aware of any any decent spots to overnight park in and around the city centre/strathcona/gateway Blvd near the river? Or areas NOT to park overnight? I’m usually pretty comfortable sleeping outside a city, but DT in Edmonton weirds me out for some reason.

lol. You're going to sleep in your car in DT Edmonton? Well, if you're too cheap to pay for a hotel, I would imagine that a hotel parking lot would be a surprisingly low heat place to sleep in your car.

My family used to sleep in the car when I was little. We would travel from town to town selling our wares at flea markets and at town fairs/exhibitions until we saved enough money to open up our own shop in Calgary. We had one of those windowless Econoline cargo vans so nobody could see us inside. I remember we once slept in the parking lot of Northlands Coliseum. I think that parking lot is still fairly accessible. And it's a large (and irregularly shaped) lot so should be easy to park there without drawing too much attention.

Very serious. I will be catching a late show, then heading home as soon as I can. I will not be sober, so driving isn’t an option. I’m a hell of a lot more comfortable in my car than most grundgy motel rooms, and there’s no way I feel like spending $100+ for a place to close my eyes for a few hours.

Careful with sleeping drunk in your car.

1) you can be charged with a DUI for being in care and control of your vehicle if you have the keys

2) when you wake up you won't have a good idea if you are sober or not so for a show ending at 11 driving home at 3 or 4 probably isn't a safe idea.

Agree with number 2, but I'm not sure about number 1. I asked a cop a couple weeks ago about this and he said as long as the keys aren't in the ignition or on your person then your fine

Yeah I'm not sure of the exact rules but before sleeping drunk in a car I would be asking a lawyer to ensure I'm not at risk. Keys in your pocket in the front seat might be different than folding down the back seat sleeping in a sleeping bag with the keys in the console.

Why bother wasting their time or yours? Just don't even put yourself in that situation if you don't have to.

I'm not a lawyer but I have to imagine the cost and hassle of defending yourself from an obviously avoidable situation would grind my gears in hindsight.
