Default Voicemail and SMS Internationally

Hey folks,

I'm trying to figure out if there is an easy way to allow my mom to have access to her voicemail and SMS while she is outside of Canada without running up huge roaming bills.

She is going to Europe for 6 months and is a Telus mobility customer. I was hoping that Telus WiFi calling might do the job but it is only while in Canada. I saw that Google has a product called Voice which seems interesting but it is not available in Canada. Is there anything that can be set up to give her access to her voicemails and SMS via WiFi when she is out of the country?

Would whatsapp work for her? it has voice and messaging, and can be used over wifi.

She uses Whatsapp but it doesn't access her voicemail or SMS accounts from her phone (unless there is something that I missing with the Whatsapp setup.)

For the voicemail could she use a voip service and call her own number. She’d then get her own voicemail but I think you push # to login to check messages.

She could probably get by with a free Fongo account.

She could forward her calls to the Fongo number (before leaving Canada, as it has to be done while still on the Telus network), and that would allow her to receive calls and voicemails while on wifi.

Keep the Telus sim in, and I believe that receiving SMS is free while abroad (but costly to send).

Buy a SMS add-on with Fongo for a few bucks and she’ll be able to send SMS while on wifi. She would receive SMS messages normally, and then reply from the Fongo number. Calls back to Canada are free too.

She leaves today so I'll look into Fongo and maybe get her set up at the airport if I get a chance.

I use it occasionally, and I honestly think it'll do the trick. It is basically a free VOIP app, gives you a local Canadian number, and you can add on texting for outgoing texts (incoming is free).

Just make sure her data roaming is off, of course, and she should be able to get stay connected while on wifi using Fongo as a bit of a bridge.

I use Fongo, as I don't bother with a sim card. It's OK in a pinch, and probably fine for this usage, but I don't think it is good enough as a phone replacement. It is good for free calls, and I use Pinger for free texts. I like Pinger becuase it also has a web interface so I can text from my computer, since I rarely have my "phone" on me.
