Again a border agent can deny you access for any reason, you don’t have a right to enter their country unless you’re a US citizen.
I can’t speak for the United States, but if you leave Canada and do anything that is illegal in Canada outside of Canada they can charge you for it. So for example just because prostitution is legal elsewhere you can still be charged under Canadian federal law for soliciting prostitution abroad. I would imagine the United States has a similar law. Part of allowing you to leave and travel is the expectation that you still abide by Canadian law as well.

I'm surprised this school in BC is banning bud. My niece wants to go there specifically so she can smoke a bunch of dope while taking classes about fish....

I guess the logical follow up is a) are they allowing ingestible cannabis and b) do they allow alcohol?

Yes, I heard the guy on the radio say they allow edibles and other forms. just no smoke. I assume no alcohol except in bars or restaurants. There's no concern for other people and second hand booze there.

You make sure to tell border protection services that when you come and go.

Not really a surprise. The US has essentially admitted that not only users of marijuana face denial of entry and a possible lifetime ban, but also anyone who works in the industry or even invests in the industry also faces the same. This confirms anecdotal evidence that this is already occurring.

The US still views marijuana as illegal and therefore a criminal activity and profiting from an illegal activity is how the ban is being framed/justified.

I read that Calgary will also have more shops than Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan combined. Yay us?

Meh, unless you're selling the stuff I don't see what changes here.

Don't bring pot to the states, don't talk about pot, don't think about pot, and you'll be fine. Unless of course you're in Alaska, Colorado, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, or Washington, where pot is completely legal

How does this work for people in states like Colorado and California that have legalized pot? If they've worked or invested in a pot operation they can't leave the U.S. and return?

What changes here is you can be permanently banned even if you have never used the product. All it takes is to work in the industry. So for example the CEO of one of the large growers could be banned. Another example, I'm hearing a number of these companies are hiring retired police for their corporate security positions. So now these people would also be banned from travelling despite a previous career in law enforcement and probably a clean history.

If you are a US citizen you cannot be denied entry back into your home country by my understanding. I believe Canada is the same.

But it's not actually. It's illegal under federal law which is why crossing borders has it's own set of issues. Even if you're flying into Washington where it's legal, you are crossing a federal border where they view it as illegal.

that really sucks.

say you operate or work for a pot company, you can't even risk lying about it.
they could easily find out if they download everything off your phone and laptop at the border.

You really think a Clinton administration would have changed the federal laws around pot since the election? I don't recall anything about pot in her campaign.

I agree it's dumb, but it's a dumb American thing, not a dumb Trump thing.
