Dube and Mangiapane are our best chances not outside the organization to gain a top 6 player in the near(er) future.

Bread showed skill and consistent 'flare' in his game in line with that ilk of player.

Dube's ceiling is still high, especially if he comes in even more ready than he was.

Otherwise we're still just filling in that 2RW spot with a third liner. Wish we could plug that hole for this season.

Which leads me to imagine the following lines.

Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Bennett-Monahan-Czarnik/Dube/Mangiapane
Dube/Mangiapane-Backlund-????

1. This puts Gaudreau with our two most skilled players who have some grit. It puts Gaudreau with our best power forward, our two best net crashers, two of our best forwards along the boards. IMO this line maximizes Gaudreau and puts two skilled players who have the grit and physicality that Gaudreau completely lacks.
2. This asks Monahan to be the man on his line and step up and lead. This might allow Monahan to stop deferring to Gaudreau and to round out his game. Gives a good offensive opportunity to whichever of Bennett, Mangiapane, Czarnik or Dube who make that line.
3. This slots Backlund in at 3rd line centre which allows Peters to have an elite two way checking line while still constructing two scoring lines

Problem? Can’t really fit Neal in

Thoughts? Bill Peters know what we have in Gaudreau-Monahan and Tkachuk-Backlund. It’s time to find some other combos that won’t be as easily neutralized in the playoffs
Some good thinking here but whenever they tried putting Tkachuk with Gaudreau (obviously with Monahan) it didn't really work - or work as well with Lindholm on the right side.

Do you think Gaudreau and Tkachuk have chemistry? On the surface it seems they should given they are, IMO, the top two skilled players on the team (each also with incredibly high IQ).

This analysis might be completely basic but I think for Gaudreau to really shine he needs a give and go type player - Like Hudler and Lindholm - quick hands, open space guys that can read what he's trying to do and then get to those spots on the ice. And this is the confounding thing because Tkachuk can do that too but again it never really took off when Tkachuk moved up to the top line.

In the middle of the ice, you need a centre who can control the puck. A guy who can receive any pass and not bobble it, who can make those deep routes defensively get the pass from the D and then attack through the middle and gain the zone. You don't have to be super dynamic or super fast just highly skilled with great hands. Think of Kopitar: when he's on the ice the Kings always go up the middle through him, he takes the passes, skates the middle and distributes.

That was the problem with CGY top line. The play went up the wing and relied on Johnny breaking down the opponent's defensive structure and creating offense. Monahan would just try to find those spots. If the opponent closed Johnny down there wasn't a give and go support close by to negate the high pressure on Gaudreau.

Whatever the realignment CGY has to improve how they continue their skill, possession game in the face of heavy pressure and guys skating through our skilled puck carriers. They have to counter that.

If we need more goals my lines will be:

Gaudreau - Monahan - Czarnik /Hudler was OK with these 2, so Czarnik may work. Especially early season.

Tkachuk - Lindholm - Bennett
Jankowski - Backlund - Neal
Dube/Mangiapane - Ryan - Dube/Mangiapane-Quine

I would like to see some shuffling of centers and wingers:

Monahan - Lindholm - Gaudreau
Tkachuk - Backlund - Jankowski
Mangiapane - Bennett - Czarnik
Dube - Ryan - Neal

I think adding that defensive play and mobility down the middle at 1C and 3C could make a huge difference.

We just had a 100+ point season tops in the western conference... there is no need to reinvent the wheel here. Our top 6 is great, what we could use is better performance out of the third line. Moving guys that we already have is just moving money from your left pocket into your right... you don't end up any richer.

To bad the Kadri deal didn't happen... that would have been ideal.

Roster Player (Backlund), Prospect (Kylington), 2 1sts.

That feels pretty close. And Frolik is likely a cap dump in this case.

I agree. If Dube or Mangiapane continue to grow their game, I could see one of them slotting in on the top two lines at some point. This season may be too early but we'll see. Also, I've said it before, I believe Bennett is an excellent 3rd liner. I'd like him to stay there and embrace that role. I'm not surprised to see how many posters list him on their top 2 lines but I think that's mainly due to a lack of a better option than Bennett being a good fit.

It would be hard for Monahan to get adequate icetime if he is split from Gaudreau.

I think he's a good enough player to drive his own line, but Johnny/Lindholm would eat up the majority of the good line matchups and offensive zone draws. Similarly, we need Backlund on the ice for important defensive situations and line matches.

Lindholm appears to be a better defensive player than Monahan, so perhaps he should be the one getting tougher matchups.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Neal
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Mangiapane - Ryan - Czarnik
Quine

I think the above top-12 could be effective. Especially in home games. The bolded could just be mixed and matched depending on who's hot or whatever.

That's irrelevant to whether or not two firsts, a top defensive prospect a solid two-way centre and a still reasonably decent forward is worth a single winger.

Cause yeah, that's a massive overpay.

The bigger question is why would a rebuilding Ottawa team trade its best young player?

I do think the Flames need to balance our top 9 a little more especially come playoff time where our bottom 6 was destroyed.

Also I think you want to separate Monahan, Tkachuk, Neal, Jankowski if possible. All bigger bodies that are a little slower, but also play a similar game where they are net front players that should be your "finishers".

When I look at the roster right now the ability to roll with 4 "pairings" of forwards stands out to me.

Gaudreau - Monahan
Tkachuk - Lindholm
Dube - Backlund (I want Dube to get the Bennett/Tkachuk treatment)
Mangiapane - Ryan

Feel like those 4 pairings of LW/C are a good start for our lines. Then you have Bennett, Neal, Janko, & Czarnik to fill in (assuming Frolik is moved).

Gaudreau - Monahan - Bennett
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Czarnik
Dube - Backlund - Jankowski
Mangiapane - Ryan - Neal

And I feel like if you need to shorten your bench late in a game you can go.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Bennett
Mangiapane - Ryan - Neal/Janko/Dube/Czarnik

Or if you can move Brodie/Frolik maybe you can go after another top 6 RW (Ferland/Johansson?)

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland/Johansson
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Bennett
Dube - Backlund - Jankowski
Mangiapane - Ryan - Neal

Why does Ottawa make that deal?
1sts are likely late ones (hopefully)
Makes no sense based on where they are as a franchise.

I'm not sure it makes sense for either team TBH.

I was more just making the point that it's not really an overpay - it's just what you'd expect to pay for a 19 year old 4th overall pick that had a great rookie season.

I like those lines. Among league-best depth at C and LW. But good lord that RW depth would be *almost* Oilers-esque.

Throw Neal on the first line. He needs a silver spoon. Lindholm and Chucky lead the second line.

I believe the Flames are still in the market for a top-6 forward (considering how close they came to pulling the trigger on Trade Deadline and Draft Day deals).

I suspect Treliving will continue to work the phones and something will happen.

That, of course will change the whole dynamic of the forward combinations.
