I agree with your sentiment, but he was elected by the party members, beating out Kara Levis and Rick Fraser with 66% of the vote. Let democracy do its thing.
As I said earlier in the Alberta Politics thread, I don't think Mandel is there to win an election; he is simply there to raise the profile of the party. Would love to see Greg Clark take it back, he would be the best Premier for this province by a country mile.

He'd have been good, but not very high profile outside of political circles.
I could see Don Iveson being a good fit. The last go around he simply had not been Mayor that long so not good timing for him.

The problem with this platform is that it requires significant introspection to what you really want, and what trade-offs a voter has to make.
For example, the best economic policy for revenue generation is a consumption tax (ie. a PST). How do you sell that?
The largest spending item in any public sector budget is wages and salaries - how do you sell job losses and wage cuts?
So really, you end up with the NDP (massive debts/deficits) or the UCP (fairy tale land of finding 10B in efficiencies without any cuts). Centrist parties can't really gain traction with good economic policy.

Alberta Party was the closest for me as well
I hope I'm not the only one that actually plans on voting for them. Please don't just blindly vote for the UCP or NDP just as a protest against Kenney or Notley. If you agree with a different party more, show it with your vote

Pretty much bang between the Alberta Party and the Libs, which I kind of figured.

Yeah, it was Alberta Party for me as well, which is a good thing since I've volunteered for them for quite a few years. They may actually get my vote this year with Dr. Swann not running again in Cgy Mtn View.

bring back shantz. you've involved with the party.
do you believe there is any truth to this? or did clark quit purely for the higher profile a leadership race would bring to the party.
I remember at the time not liking mandel winning the leadership race.
I didn't think a tired old man should be leading the party. I thought they needed someone younger with fresh ideas.

I honestly couldn't tell you with any certainty, but I'm sure the truth is somewhere in the middle. More akin to the party seeing an opportunity to raise the profile of the party and Greg being a good company man.
He's a guy that really believes in doing something good for the Province, and if he believes it was something that could raise the profile of the party, and therefore get more AP members elected, and therefore have more/better representation for Albertans, then I think he could be on side with that. Whether he was convinced or told, I can't say.
That all being said, Greg is a great MLA and will continue to do a great job going forward if he gets reelected.

I'm going to be gutted if Clark loses to Schweitzer. Not because Scheweitzer is a bad candidate but because Clark is such a good MLA and ambassador. I hate seeing two good candidates running in the same constituency like this.

I got Alberta party again which isn't a huge surprise. I just wish they'd get some more of their message out there as I think a lot of people would agree with them. They didn't even have a candidate in my riding last election, so I think they are still several elections away from actually doing anything. It looks like we'll have a AP candidate this time, which is nice to have as an option.

I agree with you about the AP getting the message out better. But if you really do like the platform I would encourage you to talk to people you know about it and send them to the website.
It certainly is up to the party to get the message out, but you don't have to be a member of the party to do that either. If you like the message, pass it along.
Full disclosure (again, I've said this a few times), I do volunteer with the AP, that's why it's important to me to let people know that if they like the message, but their feeling is that the party isn't doing a great job getting it out (believe me we are trying, and a lot of people are working hard), they they can help without a lot of effort, or getting "Officially" involved.

I was just reading the Alberta Party position statements on their website and it is difficult to figure out how they would balance their priorities. The seem to be all for everything.
Supports small businesses? Check.
Supports the oil industry? Check.
Supports pipelines? Check.
Supports the environment? Check.
Supports a modified carbon tax? Check.
Supports aboriginals? Check.
Supports social safety nets? Check.
Supports balanced budgets? Check.
Supports immigration? Check.
Supports personal tax cuts? Check.
Supports corporate tax cuts? Check.
You name it, we support it! I mean, who wouldn't vote for such a party?

Man.. imagine if all the people who align with the Alberta Party actually voted for the Alberta Party instead of viewing it as a throw away vote.
