How smart is McDavid? Honestly, from the several games I have seen he skates incredibly fast and has great hands, but is not amazing at making effective use of his line mates.

McDavid just made quite a dash up the ice, starting at his own blueline. Does a couple moves and feeds it through a couple sticks into a wide open slot for Lucic. Unfortunately, he was chugging over the blueline trying to catch up and the puck went into the corner.

Drake Caggiula is a player whom my colleague Bruce McCurdy at The Cult of Hockey describes as “a small, shifty skater,” among other things. I agree. And Caggiula is getting a “push,” from the Oilers, centering a line with Kris Versteeg and Patrick Maroon tonight in Vancouver, after playing pivot for Milan Lucic and Jordan Eberle on Monday. If there is a “3C” position available this Fall, Caggiula os most definitely in the running for it.

In the fall of 1991, I was covering the Calgary Flames. It was a sunny September day, much like this one in Edmonton, and I witting on a hard wooden bench in the old Max Bell Arena, alongside legendary play-by-play man Peter Maher (an absolute prince of a man, by the way). As we watched the ensuing scrimmage, one player immediately stood out. To all of us.

No, it was not Theoren Fleury, who was at the top of his game at the time. It wasn’t Sergei Makarov (he was “near the end”, by then, but still had marvelous moments), or even Paul Ranheim (who was just a wonderful skater, but had hands of cement). No, it was 5’8” center Shawn Heaphy.

Shawn Heaphy was a super star at Michigan State University in the ’80s. He absolutely shot the lights out during his four years there (39-30-19-49, in his senior year). The Flames picked him up in the 1989 NHL Supplemental Draft. Heaphy came to camp with a pedigree remarkably similar to Drake Caggiula’s. Heaphy was a star U.S. college player who could skate, see the ice like a damn, and put the puck into the net. Those of us in the stands that day immediately started to imagine who this firecracker would line up with, that season, for the Flames. He was such a tantalizing talent. We were more than a little excited.

I can't see Lucic playing long on the McDavid line. Pretty apparent tonight he lacks the foot speed to keep up. He would likely be better paired with Draisaitl. Man that term and money for a guy that already isn't fleet of foot.

I think that line will score a lot of goals. They'll also be on the ice for a lot of goals against, too.

McDavid is very fast, Lucic is slow, Eberle has no idea where his own end is. Should be interesting to watch.

Does everyone remember the Griffin Reinhart trade? Man, the Oilers got took to the woodshed on that one. He was awful tonight. Like really bad.

He is one of the worst d-men I have ever watched and this isn't exaggeration. I can literally skate faster than him. Man is he ever slow.

He just doesn't have NHL footspeed, and he could make up for it if he had a mean streak, but he doesn't seem to like contact either. He's a softer slower more timid version of Reggie, which to summarize means he's nothing like Reggie.

Man Lucic is slow too, like turtle slow.

Thought this paragraph kind of ties all of what you quoted together:

As I sat in Rogers Place on Monday night and watched Drake Caggiula play, I immediately flashed back to the Shawn Heaphy story and to the valuable lesson that I learned that fall: Don’t always believe what your eyes tell you, especially early in training camp.

Also, the bolded is something many of the CP community need to learn as well in regards to our own players, as it seems too easy to make harsh judgements or bold predictions at times, for being so early on in training camp.
