Brodie is way better than Barrie. If Treliving is even considering this he should be fired.

I just made it up, completely subjective and an unscientific representation of my opinion (which I like to think of as somewhat educated but also prone to hyperbole and misrepresentation).

What the hell is happening, is Barrie more likely to re-sign or something?!

I could see this going down only if extensions for both players are in place, so 99.9% unlikely.

While I don’t support this as it stands, let’s see if we can spin it;

1. We aren’t winning anything with the status quo. Why not try something, PP could use the help.
2. Brodie and Barrie both on expiring deals, with Barrie a year younger.
3. Barrie’s cap hit is 2.75, Brodie’s cap hit is 4.65

We get a new look, get a touch younger, and save a fairly decent amount of cap to foster perhaps another creative move or two.

Worst case it blows up and we are who we thought we were.

Best case ignites our PP and Monahan and Gaudreau get a spark from it.

Probably Simmonds then and Barrie if we are going by what little has been leaked before that Tre has been interested in.

Yeah I don't get this. Barrie's gonna be looking for a raise the off-season and I wouldn't want to re-sign him, and if we're just gonna let him walk, why not hang on to the better player in Brodie and let him walk instead?

Only way it makes sense is if the plan is to not even try to sign either and you can bring an asset back without completely having to give up on this season.

Only way it makes sense is if it happens now, and has to include Hanowski

If Brodie is for sure not re-signing and we think that we could re-sign Barrie on a reasonable deal, this isn't really that big of a problem. It was just a few months ago that everyone was talking about how awful Brodie was defensively.

I'm not saying Brodie < Barrie, but Barrie might be better than what we think we can get bidding on UFAs.

I've figured Sami Vatanen was a target (apparently is) so Barrie bringing more to the table offensively makes sense. Leaves plenty of room to make another move on top of that. If it is Brodie they get in a deal I just want a little more.

Poster on HF claims to work with Brodie’s sister. Said he loves Calgary but won’t be re signing due to his wife’s MS condition ( guess weather plays a part?) if true can see why they trying to flip him.

I dont see why Brodie would give a team friendly deal after nearly being dealt atleast once already, he has every reason to want market value and a full NTC which I think might be wise to stay away from if its a 6 year deal or so. I love him as a player but think there will be a break up

Vatanen has always struck me as a Barrie-type without the offense, plus he's more expensive. I can see the appeal of Barrie in comparison.

Yep. Which shows how much of a pro the guy is, having such a great season after essentially being traded. Of course it is a contract season.

Neither are far off what Hammer brings defensively. But bring more on the offensive side. You lose a bit of defense but help the offense more. And since Gio is having a rough year anchoring the PP, itd be nice to have a guy like Barrie take over and give Gio the opportunity to focus more on shutting down opponents .

I cant believe what a #### show the Flames D has become.

Giordano is old, fallen off huge after his Norris
Brodie is a UFA and sounds like he's gone
Hamonic has underwhelmed and contract talks are going nowhere
Hanifin hasn't really taken a step forward
Valimaki has hardly played the last 2 or 3 seasons, who knows what we have in him

Brutal

I believe what ails the Flames' D-corps the most is coaching. They weren't so hot under Gulutzan either, but took a massive step forward under Peters. I think this team plays way too slow, especially considering how mobile the defence is.

Never trust a Flames D that looks good on paper, will definitely underachieve.
