Our work group has recently purchased the second edition A Game of Thrones board game. It looks a little daunting but seems like it will be a fun way to mix it up from the card game.

I am an absolute board game fanatic. I play games 4-5 times/week. My top games of all time are:
1) Smallworld
2) 7 Wonders
3) Puerto Rico

I think settlers is and monopoly are in my bottom 3.

I had a debate with my girlfriend today about how many games is too many to own. She argues 20 (ridiculous) and I think 100 is the most you can play regularly.

EDIT: if anyone is looking for games for Christmas, check out http://www.meeplemart.com and http://www.germangames.com

We obviously have very different tastes. 7 Wonders is alright, although I think it's pretty brutally unbalanced, and there isn't near enough interaction for me. It's kind of a simplistic game too. Good gateway game, though.

I've played Smallworld twice and didn't enjoy it at all either time. I don't know if I have to play it more often before I enjoy it.

Puerto Rico is a good game, but again, not enough interaction for it to place too high for me.

As for your debate with your girlfriend, I think it depends on your group. Our group gets together every week, and we all have about 40 games, but we've tried not to have too much crossover between our collections. We have a lot of games that we'll never get to for a long time. Fortunately we have couple friends of the less nerdy variety, so we can play a few of those less intense games (Dixit, Carcassonne, Through the Desert) a couple times a year.

I understand your complaints about all the games I mentioned. I usually like games with simple rules. I see how someone might not like 7 wonders, but I love it personally. It can be taught to a beginner in 10 minutes and has almost no down time. And I think the interaction is similar to a game like carcassone. Not a lot of direct interaction, but a lot of screw your neighbour action.

Your dislike of Smallworld shocks me. I have never met anyone who doesn't like that game. There are just so many layers of strategy.

It seems like you like party games and I like mid-level strategy games. A fundamental divide.

Not at all. I like party games that I can play with my wife and another couple, because most people don't enjoy the games I like.

But I far prefer more difficult strategy games. The top of my list would include:

Diplomacy
Agricola
Brass
Bootleggers
Santiago

Ah, I see. I have only played 3 on your list. Agricola, I dont mind, but it has almost no interaction whatsoever. The creator even encourages it as a 1 player game! Brass is a little heavy and long for my taste. I have never really liked diplomacy, I find that it is too similar to every other world domination game, except with forced negotiation.

The one thing I love about board games is that any group of people can find a game that thy will all have fun playing. Maybe we should avoid hijacking this thread any longer. Happy gaming.

I love diplomacy, but found it hard to play in real life - much like axis and allies. I now play diplomacy online, it is the perfect long-term mail in game.

Figured I'd throw this out there, as if there's anyone in the city that plays Blood Bowl that I haven't met yet, there's a good chance they might be here.. heh.

The league that I'm running is looking to expand for our next Season. If anyone has either played the table top game in the past, plays the computer game and is interested in meeting people that play or heard of/seen the game and want to learn how to play, our group might be for you!

We are a friendly (albeit slightly nerdy) group and welcome all newcomers!

Details are here:

http://www.calgarygamers.net/clubs/b...ue-of-calgary/

or you can PM me for more info.

It's a really good group and we have a ton of fun! Hopefully I can hook a few people!

I suck at the game. And I'm only good with passing teams. And I'm stuck in Edmonton right now

Been playing quite a bit of Agricola and Power Grid lately. Love both games.

I'm kind of being slowly introduced to the world of European strategy games and so far I love it.

Not sure if anyone is interested but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I'm active on the Fantasy Flight forums in the Game of Thrones LCG and board game sections. A group of people from YYC have emailed me about learning how to play the game so I'm thinking about meeting up with their group of friends at the Sentry Box on a Saturday to show them how to play. If anyone is interested on here shoot me a PM and I'll add you to the list when I find a date that works.

It was one of my favorite games, and now my oldest boy is able to play games and would absolutely love playing this one. Too bad I sold it at a garage sale when I was 18 and wanted more drinking money.

I also used to love playing Mystery Mansion too. Another one I'd love to have kept for my kids.

I finally got a chance to play the new Civilization game a few more times and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/7...the-board-game

It's a heavier game for sure, but after figuring it out it turned out to be pretty easy to play. If you like exploration/civilization/war type games, I recommend trying this one out.

I'm planning on buying Settler's of Catan. I've never played it, but I know I'll enjoy it. My question is, what should I buy for an expansion set? I see you can only have up to 4 players with the regular game, but if you buy one of the three expansion packs, you can play with 5-6 players.

Seafarers
Cities and Knights
or
Regular Expansion

Is there a big difference in the expansion packs?

EDIT: I see there's also "Traders and Barbarians" as well.
