I'm a pretty big Bennett fan. But even I will admit that his potential to be a "top tier" player, AKA a bonafide first liner, is dead.
That does not mean he is useless or a bust. It just means we are going to have a great utility player with tons of sandpaper who will play up and down the lineup, but he's not going to be the go-to man on this team that Monahan is.

That was exactly my point, CroFlames. Thank you.
Bennett as a top line producing forward is dead. Bring up the Backlund example all you want but Backlund didn't turn into a top tier player either. His career path pivoted and he became an excellent two-way 2-3 centre. That could still happen with Bennett but the idea of Sam as a 1st line player? Gone. Gone. Gone. Gone.

Bennett is not showing the same potential Backlund did, in any shape or form. The thing that held Backlund back was injuries, but he worked through those and continued to show positive growth in his game.

No. No, he is not "struggling." Bennett looks just fine on the third line.

As far as development goes, I like to use the 250 game played mark to determine the type of player a guy is going to be. For Backlund, that 250 game mark was reached when he was 24, and he had established himself as what we see today - a solid 2nd line player with high end 3rd line capability. Bennett has played 286 games and he is on pace to score 12goals and 29 points. That is consistent with his last two seasons. Sam Bennett is what he is, a 25-30 point player who tries really hard but doesn't accomplish much. If he had some speed I would call him the modern day Paul Ranheim.
If the Flames could get something of value that would improve the team now or restock the cupboards with some good prospects, I would move him. He is not an integral part of the team and is nothing more than a widget at this point.
|
This is also selling him far short (to say nothing of his skating). Bennett looks like he could be a clutch playoff performer. He was surprisingly good as a rookie in the 2015 post-season, and then again he was one the Flames two best forwards in the 2016 playoffs. He seems to play his best in big games, and under lots of pressure, and I think could become an invaluable piece in April.

My hope is that he turns into a Stephane Yelle type player, but with a bit more scoring punch.

You simply need guys like Bennet. He’s our one guy who will go out and make a devestating hit, and then drop the gloves if anyone has something to say about it. Trust me, we need this guy, and good teams have role players. Right now he seems to know his role and it’s working. If that third line continues to play like they are and chip in here and there, then what’s there to complain about?

Players like Hall, Eberle would look like a good fit.
Or even a player like Strome, Maroon.
Or...
Wait...

He has already surpassed Yelle interms of impact on the Flames.

Bennett has proven he can help us win in the playoffs.

Isn't a Hart Trophy winner suppose to make his team better and those that play with him better.
Greasers are pretty much now where they were before McBaby has resulted in not that many more team Wins.
McDavid plays for personal stats and and isn't much of a real leader. Proof in that he plays the same way has since game 1 100mph and sticks to his own game plan.
He is perfect for Edmonton and I hope that ridiculous contract they now have to juggle i hope prevents them from making depth additions to McBaby's team for years.

I've been thinking about that, because the whole Oiler fan refrain is that McDavid makes everyone around him better.
But is that true, or does he make one player better (Draisiatl).
It'd be interesting to see other Oiler players time on ice with McDavid and how it effected their scoring. It certainly didn't help Reider, or Spooner, or Poolpary or Lucic to be on McDavid's wing.
Look, I think that McDavid is an exceptional scoring talent. But I don't know that he's an elite playmaker, and I don't know if its true that he elevates other players game.

We have the least amount of hits in the entire league.
We need guys like Bennett.
Come playoff time, he'll be a beast.

Measuring Yelle's impact on the flames by points just shows you don't understand Yelle's impact on the flames. I do like Bennett, though.
