Default Councillors green light public engagement on lowering city speed limits

No option of just leaving things unchanged? Next step is to probably close all roads on the weekend.

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...y-speed-limits

Three options are on the table, including an overall reduction to 30 kilometres per hour on both residential and collector roads (roads that move traffic from local streets to major thoroughfares), 40 kilometres per hour for both, or 30 kilometres per hour on residential roads and 50 kilometres per hour on collector roads.

City staff will examine the options along with members of the public and produce a report, along with recommendations to council, by June 2020. The public engagement process will cost about $200,000, administration told members of the council committee.

Hmmm this seems extremely high, is this true?

I'd hope she is not blatantly lying or is that naive of me.

If you have done any driving in Okotoks 40km/h sucks ballsack. I wouldn't mind the 30/50 option. 30 all the time would be really slow on 'drive' and 'boulevard' type roads, I am assuming that is what a collector road is.

The costs savings in their analysis completely ignore the change in fuel usage driving below an efficient speed.

Police involvement, EMS involvement, hospital stay, lost wages, insurance payouts, plus whatever court proceedings come about. I don't think that's an unrealistic number for a car accident with injuries

Why does this cost $200,000?

Chestermere is 40 on all side roads and it's not that bad, I actually wouldn't want to drive faster than that due to how many kids are walking/biking/scootering around

This wouldn’t bother me, it’s not that big of a deal to slow down.

Just look at the poll results. No one wants this. Speed limits aren't too fast; in many places, they're too slow.

Speed enforcement revenue is too low.

what is a collector road? basically everything that isn't a "boulevard" should be 40/30.

For example, 20th street, 33rd avenue, 26th, richmond road, 50th avenue all should be 50. All the other side streets could be 30 and no one would notice. They are so narrow you can really only go one car at a time anyway.

Ugh. They did this in Victoria despite evidence from the civil engineers here that it would make no difference in collisions. All it's done is increased congestion and made it more annoying to drive.

Instead of public engagement, they should be looknig at this, and what other cities have done, and analyze outcomes. If there is actual evidence that this is good policy, they should do it. If there isn't, asking what the public would like on their turd sandwich isn't very productive.

I never understand why our city is always coming up with these ideas instead of seeing how other cities do things.

Pretty sure the Victoria change came about through public consultation, so I guess they got it half right?

I'd be interested in knowing what has instigated the idea that this is a problem that requires resolution.

It really seems like this has been manufactured as a problem.

Maybe they’re doing both. In my city we first look at what others have done and do citizen engagement when appropriate.
