Backlund leads Rockets into next round
Quote:
With all due respect to the likes of Jamie Benn, Evander Kane, Drayson Bowman and Brayden Schenn, Mikael Backlund is the most dynamic, electrifying and dominant player right now in the Western Hockey League.

It seems that Backlund may have a Claude Lemieux personality. Ho Hum in the regular season and super star in the Playoffs.

He wasnt that ho-hum though was he? PPG player pretty much from the first game he played.
PS. good article, always nice to here after naysayers trash him most of the year.

backlund elevates his game in the playoffs and at tournaments, but he is pretty lukewarm in the regular season.
Still, it is better to have a player that play better when it matters.

That article makes him sound like a mix of Alexander Ovechkin, Peter Forsberg and Sean Avery. The writer seems a bit over the top but there's no question he's a very exciting prospect to have in the organisation.

He sounds like a Zetterberg type puck-pursuit player. Good rover in the neutral zone that attacks the puck carrier. I'd love to have that type of heady and fast player.
Also, sounds like he's got a lot of jam. Can't help but feel good about that. A player who loves to win, hates th lose and gives it to the opposition.

The back-and-forth taunting between Backlund and Tri-City net minder Chet Pickard became evident in the latter stages of overtime in game four when Pickard gave Backlund some smack after making a superb save in overtime.
Backlund gave it right back after Jamie Benn scored the winner moments. He pushed Pickard's buttons again Sunday, pointing at the Tri-City net minder after putting home a rebound that evened the score at 1-1.
His after goal celebrations are reminiscent of Washington Capital sniper, Alex Ovechkin.

This part is what really gets me excited about this kid. It sounds like he not only has a tremendous amount of skill, but actually loves to play the game.

I know, but the argument was made that Backlund had turned into trash because he had to come over here. I don't see that as the case.

Best part about the kid, he was in an interview while he was in calgary (the game before the islanders game that he ended up playing in) where he was in the stands and the reporter asked him what he thought of the game. He didnt give any lame cliched answers he just straight out said the flames needed to play better if they wanted to win this game (they were already winning 2-1 if my memory isnt too crappy).
Candidness makes me like a player... unless he is Jeremy Roenick

Boy he does seem to play a lot better in meaningful games. He's going to have to figure out that every game is important in the NHL but having a guy that gets up for the big ones...isn't a bad thing.

Man, that's awesome news to hear about one of our best prospects.

Should be good to see how some of the Flames fans on this board who consistently trash Ovechkin for his "celebrations" react to Backlund! I'm guessing it won't be a big deal because like Ovechkin, Backlund is just a kid enjoying the game.

In all fairness I think people only really had a problem with the 'hot stick' celebration.

It will probably last about two times considering who our captain is.

Don't recall Iginla telling Donovan to cool it.
Hope that there will be significantly more than 2 important goals to celebrate.

this is good to hear. I don't mind celebrations. It is true that many fans, myself included get more excited and into the game when a player shows some emotion and personality. I will never forget Fleury's slide up the boards...I think everyone enjoyed that!

Anyway goal celebrations in the playoffs are forgiveable, and that's where it seems Backlund has been celebrating. Regular season and it seems a bit over the top.

Well, I'm one of those people.. but I've been consistant. I've said I loved the way Cammalari almost non-celebrates, and hated the big swooping arm cheer Bourque does.
Big goals I don't mind though, when it comes naturally, not douchy.

Just a heads up that Shaw will be covering the Western Conference Final between the Rockets and Giants starting Saturday night. A great chance to watch Backlund in the Dub playoffs.
