Personally, I'd like to see DiResta get another chance, but that seems pretty unlikely. Perhaps to Williams and he can do live commentary/analysis from 20th on the grid.

Yeah, and again today he looked like he belonged in the top 6 cars. I'm really excited to see what he can do next season.

That was a fun race. For a while it really seemed like anyone could win it. I was most impressed by Verstappen, falling all the way to 20th and being able to work his way back to 6th. If he hadn't blown a tire right away it would have been an exciting 5/6 car race.

Isn't it pretty standard for the top drivers to pass almost everyone but the other top drivers when they start at the back with lots of race left?

Yeah Max's blow out sure was disappointing. I really liked McLaren's performance as well, except for the guy on the FR impact gun

Maybe their qualifying performance. They sucked ass in the race. Sainz's stint on the hard was laughable.
Seemed to be some systemic issue with pitstops across a number of teams. Ferrari, Alfa and McLaren all had problems changing tires. At first I thought air pressure on the pneumatic guns but surely the engineers would be on top of that. Now I'm thinking it might be thermal expansion in the hub assembly causing a poor fit.

Well the change in standings was certainly better than that race. Ferrari must have no feet left after shooting themselves in the foot. Again. McLaren and a few others also made messes of their pit stops. And the complete lack of tire degradation on the hards didn't give us the ending we were hoping to see.
Max was a bit of a victim in what I thought was hard racing through T1-T3. Got squeezed out and then Hamilton definitely had some oversteer and forced them both on too the grass. Got unlucky with Bottas' end plate cutting up his tire.
Our standings had some big changes this week!! Btimbit has jumped into 2nd place with the top score this week of 62 and 4 correct picks.
3thirty had the most right picks, 9, but somehow had them all slotted just a bit off. His lead has shrunk from 32pts to just 8 over 2nd and 14 over 3rd place...if only the real standings were this close. Jayswin had a tough week and dropped from 2nd to 3rd in most correct picks.
I'll be in Austin this weekend so will get my picks in early again...results wont be out until Wednesday next week.

If you check out the F1 twitter account there’s a ton of posts and vids on the car changes, cost cap etc. Too many to post here. Some teams even posted pics of car concepts with their liveries.

This is one of the most exciting changes to a sport I follow in a long, long time. On par or exceeding the NHL changes to introduce a salary cap and increase the speed of the game in 2005.

Will a 175m spend cap have any effect of Mercedes?

Merc and Ferrari probably spend $400mil a year, what that includes I’m not sure. Hard to say how much it’ll do to Merc’s dominance. It should help but they’re just so damn good.
Cap is anything performance related. Driver salaries, marketing etc are excluded. Haven’t read enough to know where engineers at the factory are included. Do they have to be working on the car to count? What if they analyze strategy data?
I believe $175m USD is about in line with what a team like Renault currently spends. I think they’re rumoured to be just above $200m but they’re also a manufacturer so I’m not sure how that will be dealt with vs customer teams.

It seems as if auditing this will be a huge headache.

The video I watched said they would have auditors to do it all but yeah it’ll be tough to regulate.
As with many things F1, teams whining and complaining, spying on each other etc will help it self manage a bit.

I wonder if the new formula is enough to entice new manufacturers to join the fray?
Maybe a return to pre-qualifying????

In the 80s they had more teams than grid spots. Teams would have to qualify to be able to get into free practice and it didn't end there. They cut cars after qualifying.
