Default Capitals extend C Backstrom on five-year, $46M deal

Quote:
The Washington Capitals signed centre Nicklas Backstrom to a five-year, $46 million contract extension on Thursday.

The deal will carry an average annual value of $9.2 million for Backstrom, who will turn 33 later this year. As TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun notes, Backstrom negotiated the deal by himself, acting without an agent.

Pretty good contract that Backstrom got for himself. For those that don't know, he negotiated it himself. Don't think Capitals are going to like the final 2 years of that contract.

I just don't understand salaries in this day and age. 9.2 million for a guy turning 33?

The alternative is letting him walk.

He would have easily gotten that as a UFA, and teams would have gladly played it, even if the had to plug their noses at the end.

That's the cost of winning.

If you ensure that all contracts will play out well, and let those other players go, you'll likely never win.

Look at the teams that have been winning cups. They all have contracts that won't play out well, but by then they are likely rebuilding anyway. But flags fly forever.

When you win a Stanley Cup, teams seem to take care of you. As a fan, I’m totally okay with that. Damn Cup is hard to win, and we should be so lucky to have to deal with some cap pain related to winning the Stanley Cup.

He's not worth $9.2 now, it's been 10 years since he had his 101 pt season, since then he's a 75 pt player. 5 x $7.5 would have been a fair deal for both sides. now they're in cap jail with little chance if any to retain Holtby. Samsonov has been great but can he be great as a #1?

The market says he's worth at least $9.2M for 5 years, teams would have lined up to give him that contract. And likely more.

$1.7M is not the difference between cap jail and otherwise.

Holtby is destined to leave anyway.

Not going to disagree its a bit high, but i seriously doubt they could get him at $7.5 million. Also the rumours from the start of the year was that the capitals could only afford to keep one of Backstom or Holtby. They chose Backstrom with an emerging young good goalie comming up. I would have chose the same.

They won't let him walk, they are treat him and Ovi right and let them retire as caps.

Yeah...thats why they signed him.

Really good player on a really good team.

As evidenced by that ^^^ tweet, he is taking up no more cap space % wise than he ever did before.

Sure this might hurt in a couple years, but thats a couple years that they will be in the mix to win it all.

Pierre LeBrun
@PierreVLeBrun
· 1h
Breakdown of Nicklas Backstrom contract:
Year 1, $6 M signing bonus and $6 M salary
Year 2, $5 M SB and $5 M salary
Year 3, $3 M SB and $3 M salary
Year 4, $5 M SB and $5 M salary
Year 5, $6 M SB and $2 M salary

So $25 M total in signing bonus money
Again, the AAV is $9.2 M

Clauses: Three years full No-Move. Then two years limited no-trade (player can name 15 teams he does not want to be traded to)

I doubt this will hurt them at all in a couple years. I bet he stays around a ppg or fairly close to it the whole 5 years. He’s an excellent passer, extremely smart especially on the pp. Number one centres don’t grow on trees and he would have got 10 mill anywhere else.

That’s what they’re doing by signing him. You don’t try to win by letting your number one center walk to free agency.

You would think some team would look at the New England Patriots model and try it in hockey. This is a bad contract now, and it is only going to get worse.

If he ages as well as Giordano then the contract could work out all right.

Ruthlessly walking away from contracts whenever they want? Until there is a radical change in the NHL CBA there's literally no comparison to how a team in football works.

Draft the greatest football player of all time in the 6th(?) round? And have Scotty Bowman for 20 years?

Detroit did a version of that...
