I think you nailed the team that was after Brassard in the West.

or, at least, he was. That may not sound like much, but it is.
Well on that basis not so bad. Basically got him for free plus a 4th rounder. In terms of player assets.

He sounds like the kind of player Flames would give up a 3rd round pick for. Vegas adds a pick in getting him.

Reeves and a second were traded for a decent prospect and a 1st last season. So he seems to have some value.

McKenzie breaks down how this all broke down to get the league to approve the trade:

They got him to beat up on the Flames in round #1 . Stops Ferland from controlling a series like he did against Vancouver. Had Vancouver had Reaves instead of Dorsett the Flames don't win that series.

Ottawa got a good return on what they sent over. This is the first Ottawa trade all year that I like.

Pittsburgh gave up a lot for this one. A top 4 D, top 9 grinder, goalie prospect, 1st , 3rd and 4th. Seemingly it looks like that's all Pittsburgh might do at the deadline and it leaves them with some holes in the line up...

Good on Vegas for getting in on the trade to stop another Western team from getting Reaves. Smart move.

Pior to reading this thread I had no idea that Ryan Freakin' Reaves was the key piece for winning the West

Brassard is the player Vegas didn't want the Jets to get. Not Reaves.

Scheifele / Brassard / Little / Lowry would have been some of the better center depth in the league, on a team that has some of the best scoring wingers in the league already. It's as injury-proof a lineup as any team can be. I can see why rivals would want to prevent that from coming together.

But... Vegas? Really? Everyone associated with Vegas should really just enjoy the ride and not monkey overmuch with whatever witch's brew has brought them success so far. It makes basically no sense, and if you can't understand why it's working, don't screw with it, from where I sit. Who cares if you lose to Winnipeg? You're still the most successful expansion team ever by about ten miles. Everything is a win at this point.
