God I feel stupider after reading that article. At least the comments are ripping him. How the hell can you claim you dodged a bullet by not signing the best UFA goaltender, a top 5 goalie in his prime, and claim it a win because you instead overpaid for Mike Smith? That is legit the argument he made. Think about that.

God, it's time like this I want to use the R word when describing somebody but obviously can't.

This was in the Markstrom signing thread over there, making fun of Oiler and Nuck fans: But wow, Staples is the definition of this right now. He's so desperate to convince himself that the Flames didn't pull the rug out from under them AGAIN. You can practically see the steam shooting out of his ears.

Loser: Calgary Flames

How can they have lost? They brought in a No. 1 goalie in Jacob Markstrom and a solid d-man in Chris Tanev. ... <meaningless crap>...

P.S. I’ll note that the Associate Press had the opposite take on Markstrom in calling the Flames a winner in this market: “The Calgary Flames improved their chances of advancing in the playoffs for the first time since 2004 by adding perhaps the best goaltender on the market...
Either he's pretending 2015 didn't happen or he just doesn't follow the NHL that much.

Or last year? Or this year? The bad takes are one thing but to have not noticed multiple playoff runs by the only other team in the province should get you fired from ever covering hockey professionally.

The comment about 2004 wasn’t from Staples it was the article that praised the signing as opposed to his hating on it. They are talking about playoff series wins which happened in 2015 most recently

14. Edmonton really believed it was going to get Markstrom, and were stung when things didn’t work out. Carolina made a late stealth pitch, but Calgary snared the goalie.

From 31 thoughts.

The one thing that kind of irks me is reading Oilers fans claiming the Flames only chased Markstrom because the Oilers showed interest. There were articles written about the Flames interest in Markstrom long before the Oilers rumored interest.

The arrogance of the organization thinking he was going to go there. Flames had the means to outbid them and are the more desirable location. Contrary to Kyperos belief goalies do not sign with a team to play with a top forward.

^Players might do that for a year to build their value (Barrie or Hall), but doubt anyone wants to sign a long term contract just on that basis. Especially if the franchise has been as stagnant as the Oilers .

A goalie wouldn’t be interested in doing that however.

It was rumored the Canucks were at 5.5x5 and the Flames were going hard. I am not sure why the Oilers would be so confident a 7 year offer at 5M was getting it done. It seemed like the mainstream media was convinced as well. Friedman, Kypreos, Mackenzie all mentioned the Oilers as the leader for Markstrom. Steinberg was confident the Flames were top of the list and there were Vancouver radio people that stated Markstrom would not sign in Edmonton.

Throwing shade at the Markstrom signing after they struck out (after offering a little less for 7 years) is so oilers.

There's no way you're happier bringing back Smith on a retirement tour.

That is becoming more and more obvious from Friedman's comments. They were banking on Markstrom, which is pompous. Translate his interviews with Swedish media and they'd see he wanted no part of Edmonton. Even some intel leaked here well before that he preferred Calgary. If they were actually stunned then they're pretty out of touch.

Edmonton isn't the desirable location they think it is. And goalies don't give a #### about McAvi.

I'm still baffled by his statement that they'll have improved goaltending. Its the dumbest thing that I've ever read that he expects a 38 year old Smith and a 31 year old Hate his face are going to magically improve.

Let alone in the face that Turris and JP are basically defensive disasters, and replacing Klefbom with Barrie if Klefbom is out is going to do anything to improve the defensive awareness in their own end.

If anything we're going to see even more this guy scores moments with that second line is on the ice, and Nurse or Larsson and Barrie being on the ice with McDavid and Draisaitl is really a disaster waiting to happen.

Especially not for Goaltenders. Look at Edmonton's recent history starting with Khabibulin all the way to present-day.

Its a Graveyard.

Their entire ethos is predicated on the success of the 80s. They want to run-and-gun it all the time, the defence and goaltender get no support and basically the goaltender is expected to play in God-Mode every single night or else and they typically get lit up.

Nobody who has a choice is going to sign up for that.

Oh boy oh boy. Just checking my podcasts and Holland was on with McCown and Shannon today to talk free agency and plans for next season. This is going to be a treat to listen to.

Hahaha!!

I had no idea he had a podcast.

This should be an audio version of the the human centipede.

I remember in 2007 after Lowe punted Smyth at the deadline, less than 12 months after putting his body on the line to take the team to the Stanley Cup Final.

Bob McCowan really thought Kevin Lowe knew what he was doing.

He’s also snuggle buddies with Bob Nicholson. I’m expecting 100 propaganda for the hOILER polloi.

So focused on Markstrom, they lost out on Holtby.

I can only start to image how over the top he’d be with praise of Holland, the Oilers organization and of Markstrom had they landed him.
His article only reassures me that he’s jealous and insecure regarding the team a few hours south of him.
It comes across like he’s telling his buddy he’s better off and can do better after his hot girlfriend dumps him. But everyone knows it’s not true.

Yeah the Oilers off season goalie search was the equivalent getting rejected by the new girl and deciding to go back to your abusive ex.

I'm confused with the Markstrom and the Oilers chatter.

Don't they already have a starter? I mean, why would they go out of their way to give Koskinen a massive extension mid season? I recall Bobby Nicks saying after he fired Chiarelli (mid-game) that "Mikko is our guy" and it was a group decision to extend him.
