Default One Hit Wonders - One great season (last 30 years)

https://pudding.cool/2018/04/one-hit-wonders/

Here's an interesting article that looks at players in the different major sports that had one hit wonders, which is one outlier season of greatness mixed in with a bunch of so so years.

It's interesting to see the number 1 in the last 30 years in the NHL was the amazing season Hudler had in 2015. Also, interesting to see that Craig Conroy came in 4th with his 2002 - 2004 play. It's an interesting question of whether the general play of the team allowed for a great one off season or if the one off season led to better results because of the out-of-nowhere addition of a top 20 scorer.

In the long term, I wouldn't be surprised to see Eberle and and Stepan to maybe take over a higher place in the list.

People should look at this the next time they think Kadri would make a good Flame.

I don't know if I'd consider him a "1 hit wonder" 438 points in 543 games isn't too shabby, although most of his success obviously came with playing with Lemieux (49G 66A in 88-89). Looking at his early 90's stats he must have had injury issues, he put up 42pts in 44 games with Hartford in '90-91

Most of those players were still consistent point producers over the years. Hudler was a consistent 50pts player for a while. Conroy had a selke nomination (including 2 top-5 selke rankings) before arriving in Calgary. Sure his points shot up in 2002. But he still put up seasons of 59 and 66 points (without Iginla in LA) afterwards.

In fact you could make a case that almost every player who ever played in the NHL could be on this list. There's countless examples of players putting up similar numbers to these guys, then suddenly having a PPG season then falling down. Cheechoo doesn't belong here. He scored 37 the season after, and 28 the season before. Playing with Thornton certainly shot his totals up, but it's not like he was completely useless before or after. Hardly a one-hit wonder, unless the bar is another Rocket scoring title, which is unfair to set that bar for anyone let alone him.

If I'm making a list, I put on a player like Lance Bouma. A 4th line plug his entire career, then suddenly a huge spike in production one season, then back to his norm after and out of the league. Even Jim Carey was nominated for the Vezina and Calder the season before he won it.

Ville Leino somehow put up over 50 points one year and apart from that was not even a full time NHLer.
Those are the true examples of one hit wonders. Guys who could barely hang in the league but somehow put together a single strong campaign.

This is also a great example of what meddling owners can do. For years Regier iced solid home grown teams in Buffalo. New owner takes over and all of a sudden this same GM is handing out a massive multi year deal to a flash in the pan like Leino?

Not to mention 21 points in 19 playoff games the year before. Although he played on a line with Briere who put up 30 (!) points in the playoffs that year, and 68 the following regular season. So he probably qualifies for the "riding the coattails" award as well.

This is interesting:

After not securing a contract for the 2017-18 season, Hudler’s reputation and playing career took a dive when a Czech newspaper reported that Hudler was accused of having a belligerent outburst on a Delta Airlines flight. He allegedly threatened a flight attendant, demanded cocaine, and tried to pee in a food cart.

How about Sam "I scored 8 points in a single game, even McSavior can't do it" Gagner? Does that count?
