Gio-Hanifin-brodie/Hamonic leaves the Flames in the Canucks category of Defense:
Elder/Tanev/Myers
After that Andersen-Valimaki-Stone is arguably the same as Stecher-Hughes-Hutton
Maybe Valimaki is a top-2/4 guy ... just the same as Hughes might the same.
The Flames advantage last season was that they had 4-dmen that could play in the top-2. Not a lot of teams that could do that.
|
The Flames need to move one the d-men to to make payroll anyway.
And I don't think it's close to Vancouver bad. Myers is really bad, and has been for years. Tanev is OK but can't stay healthy. Edler is declining but OK and can't stay healthy.
GIo is a Norris winning d-man. Him and 5 slugs is likely better than anything the Canucks will throw out there.

Well not really. You can put a guy on LTIR on the last day of training camp if you are over the cap. Its a really complicated system though.

I mean, I loves me some Backlund, but I honestly believe he’s a 3C on any team that would be considered a contender. Since there’s zero chance of a 1C upgrade, 2C seems like a target to me.
|
I'm sure 100% of Flames fans would be in favour of that, but it's easier said than done.
Not many teams willing to downgrade their center position, especially just to get Frolik as the prize to do so.

I think it was Dreger who did an article on LTIR when team executives found out that the Leafs had placed Horton and Lupul on the LTIR during the off-season, even they were confused or unaware that was a possibility. This would have been 2 off-seasons I believe.

The Flames trading Backlund AND Frolik for a better 2C would be almost impossible. What team is going to be able to take on $9.4 million in salary while only giving up a 2C-level player, when it seems everyone in the NHL is pressed tightly against the roof?

I didn’t say it had to be a two-for-one deal. I was thinking more along the lines of just freeing up their $$ and going after Duschene. As much as I would like to move Brodie, we’d have to replace him somehow, so moving Backlund and Frolik makes the most sense to me.

I see. When I read the phrasing of this:

...it just sounds like the foundation for a trade. But regardless, I suppose it could work, although you'd have to add to Backlund. I don't think there's any sense in pursuing Duchene, I think he's bound for Montreal or Nashville. I don't get the sense that the Flames have any interest in pursuing anyone of note in UFA this year.

Lindholm, Monahan, Backlund and Ryan.
That's fine centre depth. All of the effort is going to be on the right wing with right handed shots either through trade or UFA.

I wouldn’t outright assume Lindholm will play center next year. It does seem they’re going to try him but there are obviously reasons Peters hasn’t used him there much before. He certainly knows the player.

Brad is not good at UFAs. Keep signing the college FAs but stay away from the big ticket UFAs. That's the play IMO

Is he bad at signing Fa or just had a couple blow up in his face. And I dont think Neal counts just yet. Yes he had a bad season but I'm willing to see what next season unfolds for him.
I'd convict Brad maybe on Broiwer but then again Brouwer was the best available FA RW that year. Easy to cast stones with perfect hindsight but I think tree was signing FAs in the right mind frame.

I think the obvious reason is that Lindholm, Monahan and Gaudreau were crushing it on the top line, and the team was one of the best in the NHL. The reason the Flames are now more interested in seeing what Lindholm has to offer at centre has less to do—I believe—with pre-existing concerns about his performance there, and more to do with how the team as a whole played in the playoffs.

So rumours are out there that Tyler Myers will receive $7-$8M per season for 7 years.
All the GMs have officially went crazy. The guy is a 4/5 d-man who puts up maybe 30 points a season and is average from an advanced stats perspective
Plus he’s 29 (turns 30 next season) so you’d be locking him up until he’s 37 years old.
Canucks seem to be the front runner. Crazy to think that instead of doing things like buying an extra first round pick like Carolina did they are giving up firsts for JT Miller and offering Tyler Myers $50M+ dollars.

I pray to god that Myers gets this deal in Vancouver.
