Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has stood out as one of the most vocal opponents of Enbridge Inc.’s Line 5 project, which is the state’s main source of home heating fuels. Now, however, she’s declared a state of emergency amid a bitter cold snap in her state – and is warning that a spike in energy demand for home heating fuels like propane has put a strain on state-wide distribution.
Quote:
In an emailed statement to BNN Bloomberg, Enbridge underscored the importance of Line 5 to the Michigan market, warning the state would face daunting propane shortages if the project was ever shut down.
“It is important to note that Line 5 helps meet more than half of Michigan’s propane needs,” the company said. “Without Line 5, the State would face an immediate daily shortage of hundreds of thousands of gallons of propane.”

The big difference is they have a chance at winning. Biden was not going to flip on Keystone. It was lost on Election Day regardless of Canadas actions.
They have a better chance of convincing a governor to change their mind than the president? The president needs to be mindful of the full weight of USA Canada trade relations, the governor can just demagogue on one issue and not care about any of the larger ramifications.
No, the big difference is this would effect the part of Canada that matters. Just like SNC, just like the aluminum tariffs, just like the handwringing during the USMCA over the auto industry. It's absolutely inarguable.

“These steps are a handful of belated half-measures that put far too much faith in a company that has consistently misled the public. This isn’t enough, and for the sake of the one million jobs that depend on the health of our Great Lakes, we must do everything in our power to protect them. That is why as Governor, I will immediately file to enjoin the easement and begin the legal process to decommission Line 5, and anything short of that is insincere.
Asking Enbridge for another study is about as effective as asking a fox to guard a hen house. Replacing a fraction of a 645-mile pipe under the St. Clair River means very little to someone whose job depends on the Great Lakes. And there’s no weather, including “sustained adverse weather,” that permits timely response to an oil spill. It’s time for Michigan to elect a Governor who has a real plan to get the oil out of the great lakes.”
She got elected and made an ideological promise, so she did.
Biden got elected and made an ideological promise, so he did.
For all the talk of how Kenney made a bad gamble with Keystone XL, what about Trudeau? He had over 3 years to plan and get Energy East done as a pipeline with national interest. The writing was on the wall years ago for Line 5 when Whitmer was elected 2 years ago.
Now he's scrambling because Quebec will be impacted. Ridiculous.
