Yikes! Those nasty variants spread way easier and faster. Hopefully the flames avoided it soon enough

Scary. Perhaps with one of the variants too.

Yikes. Hopefully their families are safe, and the cases aren’t severe.

Good thing that game didn’t go forward.

Quite shocking that they were 90 minutes away from playing that game and that Vancouver was business as usual at the morning skate.

BC is having an explosion of variant infections right now. Apparently the biggest outbreak of the Brazil variant anywhere in the world (outside Brazil itself). This one also hits younger people harder, and has caused Whistler to close its hills for the season.

I know about 4 people who got Covid in Whistler (not sure what variant) and they've all had some solid symptoms despite all being under 40.

News here reported Canucks' Gaudette is really suffering from it, so probably that or another variant got him. Canucks may be out of commission for a while as BC's government is done messing about with these new strains.

This is scary and terrible news on multiple fronts. It’s really bad for the players and their families, obviously. Makes me wonder what happens if this should occur in the playoffs. What happens if the Cup final is set to start and one of the teams has several players who are positive? Does the team forfeit or do they delay the series? What if it happens in one of the earlier rounds?

Fan 960 was reporting that Hamonic was the second player who tested positive which led to the cancelation of the game the other day.

I hope he and the other players keep well. It has got to be scary, especially since Hamonic was one of the few players who actually opted out last year due to covid.

Are they doing bubbles for the playoffs again?

In Indiana, all adults can get the vaccine. I suspect it's like most states.

I'm pretty sure most will have been long-vaccinated by the time the finals comes around. Most players probably have already been vaccinated.

The dominant strain of covid is B.1.1.7 , the uk variant. Whistler didn't make the call to close down . The government shut them down . Just the way you phrased it made it seem they were the good guys. The government shouldn't have let them or big white stay open at all this year.

As I understand it, BC shut Whistler down til late April, and Whistler than opted to just shut down for the season. Pretty sure the Globe reported on that yesterday, as well as the blooming of that Brazil variant. Significant because it may be more vaccine/immunity resistant than the UK one.

Either way, its not surprising given both the travel to these resort areas and the demographics of the staff who work at them.

Is this the first outbreak (ie 5+ players) for a single team?

I haven’t been following much of the NHL outside of the north division...

I don't believe so. I seem to recall that Boston and maybe another team had a raft of positive tests at the beginning of the season.

Dallas had most of their team at the start of the season. Buffalo and New Jersey were really big as well.

It's. Not. The. Flu.

It's not even really comparable. People who say that it is are extremely stupid.

You can spread it before feeling symptoms. The symptoms seem to not necessarily be consistent among people. It's more of a circulatory illness than just a respiratory illness. Etc.

I think the incubation period usually runs a few days, so you can have it for almost a week before symptoms appear.

One of the guys I know who caught it recently was AOK until suddenly he couldn't smell a thing. Other symptoms followed shortly after.

And, as I understand it, it's transmissible before symptoms first appear, which i expect is how it can spread so easily in groups.
