Oh it all makes sense now. Only the guilty people should be investigated when they make jokes.
Since I’m not a baby murderer it’s cool for me to make dead baby jokes but if an actual dead baby murderer posts a joke then that’s not ok?

Context matters. If you cant tell the difference between making generic dead baby jokes and bragging about all the dead babies youve murdered I dont know what to tell you.

I'm a free speech advocate. I don't think Gunn should be prosecuted, run out of Hollywood, or anything but I'm just looking at this from the business side. If I run a company and it's brought to my attention that one of my employees made that volume of disturbing and tweets regardless of their intentions or motives, I would immediately call for them to be fired. I don't care if he's a good guy over beers as in this day and age I can't afford to employ smoking guns like that and quite honestly anyone that thinks those are funny and a good idea is not the type of person I would like to work with. I could kind of understand if those tweets came from a 20-something guy that hasn't grown up yet but the guy was in his 40's when he made them which I find a little disturbing.

And if taken in context to the other kind of shock material he was doing at the time then it seems a lot less disturbing. Problem is we're looking at this with the #metoo mentality that's permeating pop culture at the moment.

Yeah, but how does Disney translate online outrage to bottom line? What's the conversion rate of angry tweets to dollars?

Side note: you should probably stop looking at this in the bubble of twitter, as looking only at the # of twitter users in the world basically ignores how this stuff can be picked up in the media and travel by word of mouth.
Twitter is not a vacuum.

I'm aware that lazy journalists looking for something contentious to write about routinely cite twitter. Journalists are far from immune to believing issues that loom large in their little world have significance in the wider world.

If that's the kind of "shock material" he was doing I would question his fit with the Disney brand.

to answer both of these, these are what 7-figure executives are paid to do.
Why did he fit with Disney when he was hired and why doesn't he fit with them now.

Is this is the new trend? Intentionally Ignoring past indiscretions as a kind of future exit strategy?
On the other hand, as cringe-worthy as some of the early Icelandic thread shows, hopefully everybody has grown up since, so how long can you judge them for that content?

I don’t think comments about raping and killing children is quite on par with posting pictures of pretty girls and using it as a way to lure tourists.

I guess it depends on your definition. Making a comment that a random girls’ lips “need some cream on them” is pretty over the top. As over the top as raping and killing children? No.
The common thread between them is they’re (obviously?) jokes, so the question is: is there a limit to what you can joke about, and I think 99% of comedians would say no.
End of the day though, people just need to be more aware of what they say online, the fact that it isn’t said in a bubble, and that there can be real life consequences (and you’re not going to know what they are until they happen to you).
In the same week, Disney fired a director for making child rape jokes years ago. The Brewers kept a player who used a lot of racist language years ago. It’s not just about what you said.
