Default Brad Treliving “surprised” Mangiapane isn’t signed

Just listening to 960 on the way to work. Treliving talked about Tkachuk (nothing new, negotiations ongoing) but a couple interesting points, especially about Mangiapane:

- Tkachuk contract isn’t waiting on cap, says he has plans to get under the cap based on what Tkachuk signs for
- Is “surprised” Mangiapane isn’t signed. Says they fee their position is fair, but that Mangiapane’s camp is “passionate” about what they want, made it seem like it was more of a holdout situation than Tkachuk

My guess is the Flames are offering Sub $1m and his camp obviously feels he's worth more, and I'm inclined to agree.

Well when you get guys like Kevin Lebanc signing for 1yr 1million, its hard to disagree with the Flames position.

I figured he'd get 1 year around $850k.

Not surprised he'd want more. A little surprised he'd take a hardline stance.

You're agreeing with something you're guessing?

His experience level certainly falls into that two year $1.1M type of contract. But this could be anything ... insisting on a one year deal when Calgary wants two, insisting on a one way contract while Calgary wants him on a two way.

Honestly, if I'm Mangiapane I'd ask for close to what Jankowski is making because they are similarly impactful players. Janko is a better goalscorer and penalty killer but I feel like Mangiapane is better everywhere else.

Just to be all doom and gloom for no real reason - wouldn’t it be fun if we started the season without both Tkachuk and Mangiapane? It’d certainly put a bow on a pretty unspectacular off-season.

I don’t believe 8 goals and 54 NHL games give Mangiapane much leverage.

Yeah, that certainly seemed like a means of speculating that the management is doing something wrong, just so as to criticize Treliving.

Mangiapane is good, and he may be moving up in the lineup. But still only played 44 games last year, and 54 total, which is barely past rookie status.

You probably see guys like Matthew Phillips and Glenn Gawdin playing on opening night if that's the case. Could be an interesting audition process.

Just imagine what Stockton would look like with Buddy Robinson, Justin Kirkland, and Ryan Lomberg as its three best forwards. Not ideal.

Also Toonage -- that was in addition to Dube and Quine. Without Tkachuk and Mangiapane:

Forwards - Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Bennett, Jankowski, Ryan, Backlund, Frolik, Dube, Lucic, Quine...

That's only 11 guys. Unsure of what to do with Czarnik, but even with him, the Flames will need at least one more forward and probably two, depending on if they opt to go 14/7 or 13/8.

Hopefully this is all moot, though.

Jankowski plays C, and has 3 times the NHL experience to evaluate him on. Plus, like you said, he plays a special team which Mangiapane doesn't, at least he hasn't so far (though he probably has at least a PK skillset). It's also arguable that Mangiapane fed off of Ryan a lot, while Jankowski had the black hole of Neal on his wing (and Bennett who really only shone after the regular season).

If anything, Jankowski's $1.675 as a comparable drives Mangiapane's value down a bit IMO.

If Lazar is getting a million dollars from Buffalo Mangiapane's camp can certainly argue he's worth at least as much.

They could take care of one of the spots by carrying 3 goalies.

I'm agreeing with his camp that he's worth over 1 million. I'm guessing that the flames are offering less than that. Offering a 2 way would be less than that. Potentially a lot less.

He's finished 8 times.

He doesn't have the resume to push the averages at this point. This sounds like Ferland's agent from a few years ago all over again.
