Analysis questions discussion
Ok, I've put together the hidiously expensive Hockeytron 10000, and I'm not the analysis guy that a lot of you are.
So far, I'm obviously tracking positions, salary, the ratings of each player, as well I've broken down the cap to cost perline/pairing/goaltending duo.
I've taken that further and broken down the players costs per goal assist and points in a hybrid of real life stats versus CPHL contracts.
I'm wondering if things like Corsi and the other advanced stats have any kind of relevance.
I've also done stats matching per line using speed/scoring/defense, or average rating per line.
Any other suggestions.

No suggestion but I absolutely love that a new GM is making posts like yours. Brings a fresh new life and excitement to the league. Thank you for these.

Just when you think you have it figured out Cap, the sim will tear you a new one.

You are already more advanced than me and I’ve been in the league 15+ years.

I tried something like this a few years back, trying to find value. Ultimately though, the sim randomness is a cruel and crush bitch.
With grids that are variable, year over year, and ratings that are hard to project, at times, it can be a frustrating endeavour. I was the least active I have ever been this past season; made maybe 6 trades...somehow won. go figure.
If you can uncover something though, don't say a word.

As soon as you quit trying to figure out the sim you won a cup. Makes sense.

I was trying to think of a way to say that but you nailed it.
Good luck in your search, Capt.

100% this. I mean, you get a sense of certain things and players the sim seems to like, but really I feel like each pre-season, season, and playoff has a random success factor assigned to each team by the sim that can positively or negatively influence the performance, no matter what you do.

The best thing I can offer is... each player has two identities.
Player 1
The NHL player, this is what his rating is based on, this is the value we as GM's hold in the player
Player 2
Sim player - this is the set of numbers in our sim that we have edited the name to a NHL player to. It doesn't care who it's NHL counterpart is
You have to learn to separate the two. We as a league value and trade Player 1, but if you ignore what the numbers and results that Player 2 is telling you, you will have endless frustration.
The great thing about our league is that Player 1 is heavily valued and Player 2 isn't. If you just listen and go by Player 2, you can have success in this league.... you will just find it extremely difficult finding trade partners

I was going to chime in because I know Doug has been tracking sim stats for a long time. Glad you chimed in on the numbers.

I don't know if anyone's interested, but I'm more then willing to share the spreadsheet that I put together. Really all you have to do is plug your players and contracts and expected lines on one page. Ratings on the second page and real world player stats on the third page. Everything links together and it creates some breakdown stats.
Its really not giving anything away on my part. But if someone looks at it and says hey how about this, that could be cool.

Case in point: James Neal. Most GMs see him as Player 1... but the fact is, Player 2 James Neal will be an absurdly valuable player. And his acquisition cost? Zero.
