Default The Instrument/Musician Thread

Wondering what instrument(s) CPers might play or are interested in.

My current instrument:
- guitar (self taught; I'm just ok, far from great, but enjoy it)
- Own: Fender stratocaster; Yamaha 6 string & 12 string acoustic guitars
- Also own: ukelele, didgeridoo

Next instrument I'm buying:
- A tonguepan (strange I know but fascinated with this instrument for some time - first saw handpan being played by a busker in Vienna several years back and was amazed; similar to a handpan (Hang was the original by PanArt; also known as steel tongue drums, and a variety of other names)
- I think I'm getting the Pulsar from Yudin Workshop (alternatives include RAV Vast - all of these are made in Russia; handpans are much more expensive and are made in Russia, Finland, Bali, etc.)
- Biggest issue: other than the fact I have to order from Russia is actually choosing a scale - there are so many options and custom ones you can do

My current favourite song by this sort of instrument:
New York - Sam Maher:

What do you currently play? What are you interested in playing in the future?

I'm a guitar freak, have been since Green Day's "when I come around" came out.

Guitars:
Gibson SG Standard (1997)
Fender Standard Telecaster (2004, w. Fender Vintage Noiseless Pickups)
Ibanez RG870QMZ (2013, w. Dimarzio Evolution Pickups)
Squier Bronco Bass (FYI, basses work just fine through a guitar amp, just don't crank it)
Yamaha Electric Acoustic.

Amp + Cab (I'm going for a Vintage Marshall meets Modern Mesa sound)
Mesa Boogie F30 Head
Homemade 2x12" speaker cabinet with Celestion Greenbacks

Pedals
Boss DD-3 Digital Delay
Boss CS-3 compressor
Ditto x4 Looper
EHX Electric Mistress
Fulltone OCD drive
Wylde Wah

I'm mostly working on my looping skills (a la Tash Sultana or Ed Sheeran), my gear was starting to collect dust before I picked up the looper, and it's breathed new life into me as a musician, because I don't have a lot of time I can commit to music these days. I'm thinking of adding a sampling pad into the mix so I can add drums. There are very few things in life I enjoy as much as smoking fat bowls, making a loop for 'comfortably numb' and wailing away on the solo for 20 minutes. I don't care what's happening in my life, cuz I'm cruising through the cosmos when that #### kicks in.

My artist friend here painted my SG kit, and I'm just waiting for the guitar tech to apply finish and add the neck and hardware.

Drums. I'm a Pearl whore. Have some Tama snares kicking around though.
Currently play 2 kits in the studio. A 7 piece Pearl Reference, 22" and 20" kicks, 10" and 12" rack toms, 14" and 16" floors. Pearl Masters MRX maple, 22"x2 kicks, 8, 10, 12" racks, and 14 and 16" floors.
Have a Masters BRX birch kit that I gig with. I gig small; kick, rack tom, floor tom, snare.
I also build stave snare drums. Was thinking about showing a few off in the builders thread but the ones I have on hand are not 100% finished yet.
If I could play any other instrument, competently, I would choose violin. Piano would be nice for composing purposes... secondary axes take too much time away from the traps though.

Played flute in high school, and made the all-city band, which was kind of an all-star team. Also played piccolo and a bit of alto sax.

I play the drums. Purely 100% as a time wasting hobby though, bands or jamming, haven’t actually worked on anything go several years. It’s a really poor excuse, but #### happens and I don’t have a place I can play most of the time, and I’ve just kind of stopped working on anything.

Piano here. Took it up again 3.5 years ago after quitting in my early teens. I take regular lessons and I’m working towards the Grade 5 RCM exam currently. I also bought a 15+ year old Kawai grand piano last year and I really love it.

I don't play near as much as I used to. In my younger years I gigged a lot and did the bar scene in my part of Illinois. Here is my favorite pick from years back of the kit: (pardon the red wings shirt)

I still have roughly the same cymbals from all those years back, but last year I did finally get new drums:

Just for giggles, here is me playing the drums from my dads band when I was little:

The old kit was a Tama Rockstar from around 2000. Added an extra tom for 10,12,13,16.

New kit is Mapex Armoury. Sizes are:
Mounted tom: 10x7, 12x8 in.
Floor toms: 14x12, 16x14 in.
Bass Drum: 22x18 in.
Snare: 14 x 5-1/2 in.

As far as my sizeable tin investment, I have always been a Zildjian guy:
14" A Series New Beat Hats
20" A Series Ping Ride
8" 10" & 12" A Custom Splashes
17" K Custom Dark Crash
18" A Custom Crash
12" & 18" Oriental Trash (used Wuhan CHina's for years, but decided to switch back last year when I got the new kit)

Man, I wish you were in SW Ontario, I would recruit you to play drums for our 80's new wave band. We can't find a drummer with electronic drums for the life of me and normal drums won't do.

Do you have a site or bandcamp? I'd like to hear what you are up to there. Not sure I'm good enough to play drums in a band.

I play the violin and am wanting to start guitar.

Sometimes I also tap my feet under my desk to whatever I'm listening to on Spotify, so I'm skilled in that too.

I’ve got a piano, acoustic guitar, violin, cello, drums and a ukulele. I’m pretty good on the piano, not terrible on the guitar, good vocals, and everything else is just hobby time. I wrote and recorded an album a couple years ago for fun, but I don’t take any of it too seriously.
