He's been good all season - even earlier in the season when he was a whipping boy for some he was playing fine but puck just weren't going in for him.

Been a really good bottom 6 forward for us and if the 4th line keeps playing well then they will be huge from a depth perspective come playoff time.

I know he had a lot of looks that were way better than his first goal last night. For his size he's a very effective guy.

There are lots of reasons why the Flames are doing so well this season. Derek Ryan is clearly part of that conversation. He is one of the best 4th line players i've seen in Flames jersey in a long time.

Ryan is a beauty. Our depth forwards are just a pleasure this year.

In his last 30 games, Doc Ryan has been producing .63 PPG which over a 82 game season would be 52 points.

Quickly becoming one of my favourite Treliving signings ever. Might be his best UFA work.

Ryan has been so good lately, it's starting to feel like he's here on a value contract.

He's right up there too.

Honestly for all the flak Treliving gets for his UFA work he's done quite a few good things in the period:

- Derek Ryan at 3 years, $3.125 million in 2018
- David Rittich to a 1-year deal in 2016 out of Mladá Boleslav
- Michael Frolik at 5 years, $4.3 million in 2015
- Deryk Engelland at 3 years, $2.9 million in 2014
- Garnet Hathaway to a 2-year deal in 2015 after trying him out with Stockton
- Kris Versteeg to a 1-year, $900k deal in 2016 (and even the re-signing, although Versteeg got hurt)
- Raphael Diaz to a PTO and subsequent 1-year deal in 2014

There have been some mistakes (Brouwer and Raymond for sure, and the Neal contract might get there) plus some meh stuff (Czarnik has been just okay, Jagr had potential but didn't work, and Hiller had a good first year but an atrocious second year) but for a supposed weak point, Treliving had actually done a lot of good with UFAs.

I kind of disagree. I think it took him a few months to fit in and become comfortable as early in the season he was invisible at times as many of us that didn't see him play in Carolina were scratching our heads how he managed to score 15 goals and 38 points in Carolina as he was showing nothing in offensive ability. There's no doubt he's found his role on his team and is now comfortable but it wasn't an instant fit which is not surprising as it can take a full season for some players to acclimate to a new team. He's definitely been one of the best Flames down the stretch which bodes well going forward.

I don't disagree with that. His offensive game, early on, was poor. A lot of plays died on his stick. Now you are seeing him make some nice skilled plays resulting in goals.

Earlier in the season Ryan was also on a pretty bad line of Dube - Ryan - Neal. Neither guy is presently even on our roster if you think about it.

That line is more of a miscasting of Neal than Ryan.

And to say Neal isn't "presently even on our roster" is disingenuous, as he would be playing if he were healthy. It's not a situation like Dube at all, where there's no room for him on the Flames roster because he's not currently good enough.

Not true. His offence was non-existent to horrible for much of the 1st 3 months of the season.

Fixed the second one for you for accuracy's sake.

He was playing with Jeff Skinner?!

That makes a difference.

Neal has fewer goals than 12 other forwards on the team, some of whom have fewer GP, plus two defensemen.

Neal might be on the roster if healthy due to name recognition, but he's very much in that Dube boat of "not one of the clear 12 best forwards on the team". Not this year at least.

Derek Ryan recorded his 100th and 101st career points with a pair of helpers in Thursday's victory over the Senators. He now has nine goals and 32 points this year. Most impressively, 'Doc' leads the Flames in P/60 (points per 60 minutes of ice time) since the all-star break with an astonishing 3.41 in 5-on-5 situations (13 points with an average of 9:56 per game in even-strength ice time). Matthew Tkachuk is second (2.60), followed by Austin Czarnik (2.46), Andrew Mangiapane (2.40) and Mikael Backlund (2.36)

In 2018, Ryan had 4G, 7A, 11P and was -4 in 39 games (.282 PPG)

In 2019,Ryan has 5G, 16A, 21P and is +16 in 34 games (.618 PPG)

Incredible. It's almost like it takes time to adjust to a new team, and fans should be patient.
