I give 'em about a 4/10.
We took a goalie and a re-entry in the second round (with picks that could've been traded for a first). They might turn into Brodeur and Leclair, but at the moment the value just isn't there.
If we had gone off the board instead of taking Bennett, I'd give them about a 2.
Flames picks = big.
Big = irrelevant.

I'm convinced the other 29 teams just forgot Mattsson wasn't picked.

Not sure about the late round picks but extremely excited about Bennett. He was a no brainer so hopefully some of these other guys pan out

How about we wait to see these kids at the developmental camp and main camp before we automatically call someone a bad pick. Hell we need to give them a few years, they are 18 year olds, maybe our scouts have seen a lot more in the kids than we as armchair GMs on Youtube! Our scouts have seen these kids many times, I will give them the benefit of the doubt for a few years.

A+ based on Bennett alone who will be a difference maker for this team. The rest is all gravy as there aren't going to be a lot of full time NHL players to come out of this draft which IMO is one of the weakest in a long time after the first round. Try to come out of the first round with your guy and hope you can find a player in the junk pile following.
Media likes our draft so who am I to disagree?

Other than being a little underwhelmed by the Hickey pick, I like what we got.
I might not have picked a goalie at 34 but since we did, Im glad it wasnt Thatcher Demko. The Flames would have have seen Demko plenty of times playing on BC and they likely saw something in his game that they didnt like as much as McDonald and Im fine there.
I like the Hunter Smith pick. Im very interested to see how he performs next year, likely riding shotgun for Dal Colle on Oshawas first line.

Here is another one from Yahoo.sports
"Winners: Calgary Flames
Sam Bennett could blossom into a star and the rest of their draft was very solid, including Mason McDonald (goalie, No. 34) and a big body Hunter Smith (RW, No. 54). And they even added a little truculence with a ring for Brian Burke in Chicago's Brandon Bollig."

Ranking an entry draft this early is a fools game, plain and simple.
I think they got the best player in the draft with Sam Bennett, that alone is exciting. Hunter Smith is an interesting prospect, passed over last year but seemed to be ranked high by all the various outlets and obviously by the Flames themselves.
They hadn't taken a goalie since 2012 so you knew one was coming, would have prefered it to be outside the top two rounds since goalies are flakey but considering the run that happened on goalies in the 2nd round, hard not to understand why the Flames took their guy.

I'm not even going to pretend like I know anything about the picks after the first round. I'll just put my trust in the Flames scouting staff. Sounds like we got a pretty good goalie prospect, a smooth skating dman, a hulking dman, and a couple hulking forwards. I'm satisfied with that. If they can compliment guys like Bart and Johnny Hockey, I think this draft augments the Flames current prospect roster quite nicely. Super excited about Bennett. Everything else is just bonus.

I give an 9/10. Two solid second round picks, AND they did not screw up their first pick. Nailed it.

So, cheering for losses... can we put that to bed?

I remember when we were declared the "winners" of trade deadline day 2009.
It's too goddamn early for anybody to declare any team winners of this draft.
EDIT: Or losers.

I would have loved to get Roland McKeown but it's not going to ruin the draft for me. We got Bennett and some kids who project well in our scout's eyes.
It's time for a celebratory drink.

Did Bleacher Report mention the 3 over-agers out of 6 picks?

Of course it is but there seems to be a lot of negativity in here basically because the Flames drafted a lot of size and for whatever reason without ever seeing them play lots of people use the assumption that size = plug.
Nobody knows how they'll turn out . But I do know Calgary has been drafting more skilled but smaller players the last few years and size is a major hole on this team, in order to fill that hole you have to draft it and hope for the best.
Personally Bennett was who I wanted even over Ekblad so I'm happy with the outcome no matter what and I think the Smith pick was a good one as well. Other than that I have no idea how this draft will turn out.

Bennett was a great pick, though I really liked Ekblad too. Overall, I'm happy.
Not many seem to like Bollig? =/ I can see interesting potential in him as long as we use his services properly (which I assume we will), he was cheap and brings vet presence. I liked it...
Don't know too much about later prospects to be honest. I'll trust management.
Rather than a number, I'll give a thumbs up.

I actually like the Bollig trade. He's younger than Westgarth. However, I would have rather went for Bickell.
