Calgary looking at getting a goalie
Reddit User - Adragon23 seems pretty close to some sources in the Flames.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CalgaryFlam...one_goalie_if/
Supposedly he broke the Gulutzan firing, Peters hiring, Neal signing, Brouwer buyout and the Lindholm signing as per HF.

Flames have been kicking some tires on a few goalies around the league. I'm hearing Saros is a target but price may be too high at the moment.
This news kind of took me by surprise as I thought Smith had that job solidified. I'm a fan of Saros so I hope that happens.
nothing is immeninent.

Interesting if they don't believe in Smith going forward for this season and want someone younger to take the reigns.

Well, I've always felt that Smith was a stop-gap measure. They cant believe in him because he cant be a long-term solution.

Saw this in another thread but I love this rumor so glad to see it get its own space.
What would that possibly cost the Flames?
Its insane to think the Preds would move him, but its also suggested they didn't hang up on Treliving either. The source seems legit, this could be interesting.
And if not Saros, who else could they be looking at?

Don't think it is surprising at all.
There is no succession plan for the #1 goalie spot as of right now
Smith is near the end of his career.
Question marks on whether Gillies or Rittich will be more than NHL back ups.
Parsons has a lot of development left.
If Treliving wasn't kicking tires on a future #1 he isn't doing his job.

Saros is exactly the kind of goaltender they should target. Would be a perfect fit, given that Smith only has a year left.

Pekka Rinne is only a year younger than Smith. Why does Nashville do this?

I believe in the Jays.

I'd be shocked if Rittich/Gillies is the back-up all season. At the very least I'd expect to a TDL pick-up. I just can't see the Flames coming out of the deadline thinking that they'd be fine going into the playoffs with Rittich/Gillies if a late season injury to Smith were to happen.

Only way I see this is if Saros is getting tired of playing second fiddle to Rinne and wants out ASAP.

If the Flames expect to ride Smith through the playoffs there is no way they can risk him playing more than 50 games this season. They also shouldn't expect to ride him through the playoffs for that matter.

What goalies are out there that the Flames should realistically target that they can fit into their budget?
Jake Allen?

I think they go to camp with what they have and if it is not enough they make a move early in season.
I am hoping Gillies has a breakout year and is the backup from day 1.

Absolutely. But the Catch 22 here is that we need to play them in order to find out. Bringing in another goalie pushes all three down the depth chart and clouds the assessment process.
I would prefer to play this season out and see how everyone progresses. If we don't like how they develop, then we go hard after another goalie next summer.

While this would surprise me, its also possible that Treliving has seen enough in both goalies to know that they aren't the solution if Smith drops early in the year and knows his job could be hanging on playoffs.

Is there possibly a backup (preferably young) that hasn’t received enough playing time or could potentially break out if given more time?

Agreed. Poile doesn’t do this unless Treliving is paying him too much or Saros is asking for a trade. I could see Saros asking for a trade because he probably knows he is ready for more.

Until Nashville announces a long term extension for Rinne (last year of his contract before UFA), very low chance of this happening.
Remember when Treliving was kicking tires on Matt Murray, but the Pens weren't giving him?
Almost the same situation with Saros and the Preds.

Saros's deal carries him through to 2021, which is a perfect timeline to start seriously considering a transition from Rinne. He hasn't shown much interest in slowing down anytime soon, but that leaves them re-negotiating with Saros when Rinne is 38. That's a pretty good position to be in. If Rinne hadn't declined and handed off the reigns by then, I'm sure it is a close future step.
I like that they're looking at potential #1s to step in as early as this year, but I think Saros would be a can't miss deal on Nashville's end to disturb the lineage they're developing.

Maybe Nashville thinks Rinne can stop the puck until 40 and in that case extend him for the next few years. If they traded Saros I could see one of our goalie prospects like Parsons or Gillies and a pick going back. When Rinne finally falls off either of those two could be ready and they have an additional asset on top of that.
Seems like too much of a headache for Poile though when he can play it safe with Saros who has been one of the games top goalie prospects for some time, why create a problem in net when the solutions right in front of you.
