What's up with the little taxiway extensions on the east side? They plan on building something else out there?

Future parallel taxiway that could tie into FBO's, cargo ramps and other airside uses.

I figured that, but I didn't think it was something they needed to build in advance.

Figure it's to avoid any potential runway service disruption when they do get around to building it.

Yup, build them that far now, then when they want to finish the runway, they can do it with minimal/no closures.

I have also heard that once the parallel is open they will close the current 34/16 to upgrade it to the same level as the new one. Will take about one year.

Funny,
Knowing absolutely nothing about air traffic control, I was expecting something a little more high tech and ergonomic in a brand new tower... Those workstations look like my home office... even down to the keurig and the $17 walmat white fan.

I am starting a new job with the Authority in about a month, coming from Toronto where I worked for GTAA and a consulting firm that worked with airports and Air Canada.
I am working on the financial side of things, but if people have questions I can try to figure them out, but unsure how active I will be here. Not a Flames fan, more joined here to learn/talk about the city as I am new here.

Welcome, thats mostly why I am here as well.
Big Flames fan is how I found it but I spend 0% of the time in the Flames forum and 100% of the time in the Off Topic as I was also once new to Calgary.
This is a great site for all things Calgary.

In other news I am somewhat ticked that Icelandair announced service to YEG this week (4x weekly starting next year).
Definitely a case of tapping into an under-served YEG-Europe market, but it is little things like this that can chip away at what we are building here in YYC, and the CAA and board should be on top of these things and work to minimize the impact it could have on passenger numbers here.
Bright spots on the horizon are the almost all but guaranteed AC YYC-PEK route (once they have the metal for it) and another mystery Asia flight that will stop in YEG as part of the routing to us.

While it is a loss for YYC, you are always bound to lose eventually and this is probably a loss they'd take over other potential defeats. They just have to make sure it is a single chip rather than the beginning of something.

Boo hoo.. we lost a direct flight to a country of 300,000 people. Like it's been mentioned, the CAA has bigger markets in focus (Asia)

You are missing the point (like many others), the flight isn't about direct service to Iceland, it is that Icelandair has set up a nice little hub for their flights onward to Europe (at cheaper rates than most carriers flying AB-Europe at the moment).
As it stands with the upcoming YEG-KEF flights, you get to Iceland and transfer to your next flight to Europe in about a 1-1/2 hour window.
So this is a route that can chip away at not only Air Canada's YEG-LHR flight, but could definitely have some impact on our flights to LHR, FRA, and AMS.
Here is their route map, showing the new service to YEG and YVR:
