Sharks re-sign Erik Karlsson (8yrs, $11.5 mil AAV, full NMC)
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
All signs are pointing to Erik Karlsson returning to SJ and re-signing with the Sharks, which would take the most prominent name off the 2019 UFA board.
Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
That would be a huge coup for Sharks GM Doug Wilson, whom I'm told had dinner with Karlsson recently and no doubt has been on full-court press...

Further to @TSNBobMcKenzie's report on Erik Karlsson, I'm told the deal is indeed done: 8 years max deal, north of $11 million per season... the Sharks with a huge move in keeping the superstar D from hitting the market.

Jeebus is that team top heavy.
Leaves them with just under $14 million to sign seven more players.

As a result of Karlsson re-signing with San Jose, the Senators will receive a second-round pick in 2021 from the Sharks
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Doughty signed for 13.8 per cent of cap. If ceiling does hit the projected $83 — Karlsson comes in around $11.45.

This is great. Halfway through that contract San Jose is going to regret it.

Can hardly wait to see how this contract screws over the Sharks in the future. He’s good, but yikes. That’s a massive amount of cash for a guy who’s best and healthiest days may be behind him.

Nice.
Karlsson stopped looking like a superstar just this season. Should trend the same way for our div rivals.

Over $26 million per year tied-up long term in three defencemen.
Karlsson is the only one who is currently under 30 (and that will only be for the first season of the deal).

In four years:
Burns, 38, $8 mil
Vlasic, 37, $7 mil
Couture, 34, $8 mil
Karlsson, 33, $11 mil
Kane, 31, $7 mil
All with multiple years left on their contracts.
The Sharks are pretty obviously going for it now, knowing in 3 years or so they are going to be in cap hell.

Assuming Friedman's numbers hold true, only 2 players in the NHL will have a higher cap hit than Karlsson. McDavid and Matthews.

I'd be surprised if his ankle holds out for half of that contract. He's highly skilled, but below average defensively without his mobility, and that is a hefty overpay for a guy that has struggled to stay healthy.
Still, he's going to be a very valuable player for the next 3 or 4 years, and they're likely doing a full tear-down at that point anyways. I'm sure Karlsson wasn't going to sign for 3 or 4 years anywhere, so it's the cost of doing business with star players.
This may or may not hamper their ability to keep a good team together. Much of it will depend on his health and ability to play at a high level.

Yikes... great player but that's a gigantic contract for a guy who will be pushing 40 at the end of it, that's already had major injury problems...
