Snark aside, why exactly can't Lazar be a Hathaway replacement? Honest question. 4th line RW who can skate, hit and pot 5 goals or maybe 10 if he gets lucky like Hathaway or Bouma.

He doesnt do one particular thing good enough to make any difference except...skate, or at least at last viewing.

Skating is great and all, but he has to do something else well and he simply cant.

After the Flames get Reeves, they won't need Hathaway.

Doesn't Reeves make almost $3million a season? If so, I'm not sure flames can afford to be adding that much in cap for a 4th line player.

Flames are probably hoping Tuulola will be a Hathaway replacement but on an ELC.

IMO he ends up in Stockton though, at least to start.

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
#Flames qualifying offers for RFA’s are due later today. Expecting most to be qualified but a few interesting ones.

Will Curtis Lazar get qualified? Also curious about Kerby Rychel’s status. Not expecting offers to Mason McDonald or Josh Healey.

If a player isn't qualified today, are they still an RFA until July 1 and then they're a UFA or how does the timing on all of that work?

All players are under contract with their respective teams until July 1. If they don't receive a QO they will become UFA on July 1.

I actually think Lazar is good defensively. I thought he was really good on the forecheck, and I actually really love his non-stop motor. He was looking better and better that last season he was here on the Flames, and looked to finally have been finding his niche. I really believe he can become a good depth player to use on the forecheck and on the PK. I would qualify him, especially if Hathaway expects a bigger raise.

I wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Lazar, but he still seems to have no finish. Has a very high gear but can’t seem to translate that into production at the NHL level.

Very Paul Byron, who didn’t really find himself a solid spot until his mid-late 20s. I’d say Lazar is worth keeping around just to see if that happens, might have a 30-35 point guy yet, but his presence also won’t make or break the Flames either way.

Apologies if this question has already been asked:

Is there a time today that these must be done or is it by midnight EDT?

It's a little odd. He was one of the best forwards in Stockton and the coach there raved about his two way play. But when he got called up he didn't get a sniff of ice time despite there being some opportunity to insert him. Which makes me think Peters isn't a fan, which in turn makes me think they will move on from him.

I think so too. I don't think Peters cares for the "happy-go-lucky" types. Eddie Lack was another one.

Article in the Athletic today had this to say about Hathaway:

Quote:
Garnet Hathaway, 27, Right Wing
Last season: Calgary Flames, $850,000 cap hit
If, as is often the case, the NHL pendulum swings back to a heavier style of hockey given St. Louis’ relentless, physical style of play, then the 6-foot-2 Hathaway will be the kind of free agent who will be attractive to teams looking to add in the bottom six at a short term and dollar. “He’s got that grit,” one longtime scout and player said of Hathaway, an undrafted native of Naples, Florida. “He’s got that intangible of work ethic and toughness.” That said, he is more a place-holder in your lineup than a core player, the scout added. “He bridges that space and can do the job,” while your younger prospects get some seasoning outside the NHL. In short, the scout said, “he’s a replaceable player. And we all have those guys.”
