I don't think he left for Columbus. He got stuck with Columbus. I'm sure he would have been more inclined to sign with the Flames if he knew that Philly was not interested.

I'm just trying to make the point that I don't think upping the offer $ wise moves the needle with Hanifin. He wants to leave. Not sure how much clarity and how much notice he has given to the club about that. We might come out to find that he had told the team since last summer that he wants to be traded. No one will really know until hindsight.

He could have come back to the Flames and signed a 7 x $10.5M deal to stay.
He didn't.
So clearly, it was not a $ decision.

Not directed at anyone specifically. Just appreciative of the fact he really didn't F over the club.

He chose Columbus
He may have messed up some negotiations but at the end of day, he chose to go there. He was not forced to go to Columbus.

Just like how Lindholm wont be "forced" to go there, except no one else will take him.

It’s much simpler solution to just go sign a contract in those red states that are mentioned and call it a day. You know that the rules won’t change or the tax authority won’t contest you and/or you don’t need a complex tax scheme to pull off the desired impact.
There are a lot more options that are also available to financially plan your future in those states as well.
EDIT:
The major downside to this being the question- why would an athlete want to defer their income to later on in life when they could benefit from that income at this very moment today if they were in a different state/tax jurisdiction.
So in summary, Allan Walsh isn’t telling the whole story.

This is annoying.....the Red Wings have assets up the ying yang and are the perfect trading partner..... If they don't get Hanifin, I hope Conroy dangles Rasmus to them for their top assets. I'm tired of all the lip service these guys are giving Calgary only to demand out in the last year of their contract and give us a list of 3-5 teams.
Beat the boat, Connie!

Andersson is staying in Calgary. Unless his relationship with the team sours, he'll be here all of next year too. Maybe if he wants to test free agency then he'll be dealt sometime during the 2025/26 season. Hard to predict what he'll want that far ahead.

My understanding is that Edwards wasn't going to let him have that option. after he walked away from the offer he had asked the Flames for.

I think it's important to have this in there because it isn't their full income, so let's all tell the whole story.
The point being made is that it is by no means as big an issue as it is made out to be.

Not sure I follow your argument. A pick is an asset. An asset that you will hopefully monetize. Net present value tells us the sooner you monetize an asset - all things being equal - the more value it has to you.

Being paid in USD and living in Canada should also enter the chat when the exchange rate is 1.35:1. There's more to consider than just the tax rate.

I’ve said this for years. If you are a Canadian player, playing in Canada and being paid in USD…. The tax differences almost become a non issue

And TBQH, I don't blame Edwards for it.
