Default Blues 3 Flames 2 I'm sad edition

I think both teams have to be pretty happy about last night’s game. St Louis wins their last game on a Western Canadian swing in a tough building, and sweeps the road trip. Calgary overcomes a two goal deficit in the third period v. the Cup champs—who are rolling—and earn a hard-fought point.

It sure looked to me like both teams were playing at a high level, and both teams badly wanted the win.

Tkachuk should be on the top line.

Were they? They may have been, but did you read anything suggesting they actually were?

I'm a big Johnny fan, but he's making way too many selfish mistakes with the puck.
The whole team is making a lot of bad choices with the puck right now though.
it's really weird, and amazing the team has as many points as they do.
Hopefully some extended practice time this next week will smooth some of that out.
all in all, I'm pretty optimistic about this team moving forward.

Johnny is pressing. The worse things go, the more he tries to do it all by himself.
Hopefully this break in the schedule is just what the doctor ordered.

This might be the first extended "slump" Johnny's been in, and thus somewhat of a new experience. He'll sort it out.

Calgary played four games in the last week after returning from a long road trip that ended with a back to back and then coming home and playing every other night. the Blues just had two days off and played 3 in the past week. their number one goalie played one game in the last 4 days.
Why were the blues burnt again?

I am pleased that he got banned, and I wish crap like that resulted in bannings more often. I don't come here to see posters rudely attacking other posters.

Obviously the mods felt the same way.

Banning someone is easy, I respect that posters are given every opportunity. That said, it seems more of these types of posters have been cleaned up. It is nice to be able to come to a community where there is a strong culture of respect while still being able to share diverse opinions. I have observed other forums where people can get banned instantly just "for bringing up an opinion that, that said mod didn't agree with".

It is better to engage posters through participation and dialog, this strengthens community tolerance and raises the quality of content. The mods here have experience, work together have more detailed info so we can be confident there is a strong process..., "before dropping that dreaded ban hammer".

Back on topic, really enjoyed the game, It is games like this where the Flames can measure up where they stand with the best and what they need to do better. St Louis was more posed, disciplined and were the better team but these Flames appear to be on the rise and can play better. It was a game of details, and that was the difference.

On a positive note re: Gaudreau. I am sure he finally stopped the play-killing sharp-angle shot from the left boards last night. I can't remember seeing it once. Downside is that I am not sure he knows what else to do. Gaudreau seems to handle a lot of zone entries, but somehow always winds up isolated. Other teams know you can double team him as he crosses the blue line and he will frequently turn the puck over. It's been going on all season, yet the top line just doesn't adjust. Seems he never has an outlet pass. It's either dump it in, or try some fancy footwork around (usually) two defenders, sometimes three or four if he's feeling frustrated. I can't tell if he's out of sync with the rest of the line, vice-versa, or both. Not saying he needs to be benched for being completely awful, but maybe to give him a chance to gain some perspective.

The Brodie hate on here is absolutely ridiculous. He’s not perfect but neither is Gio. Honestly, this year, I’ve noticed Gio making more dumb plays and turnovers than brodie.

It’s the same hate that Bouwmeester got when he was here. They are essentially the same defenseman, great skating mobile defenseman. They are both a bit soft and don’t put up a ton of points and that’s why people Hate on them but that doesn’t mean they aren’t effective.

woukdbit be too crazy to try these lines:

Tkachuk-Monahan-Mangiapane
Gaudreau-Backlund-Lindholm

Two snipers for Tkachuk to work with. The line is a bit slow but Mangiapane is a bit of a speedster. Still enough skill to for fancy plays.

As for Gaudreau, the guy is completely useless in the defensive zone so put your two best defensive forwards with him. Also puts him with two guys who are good on zone entries themselves as opposed to Monahan who seems to always just defer to Gaudreau.

Agreed.

Gio plays his best with Brodie, and the team is better with them as the top pair. We need to go with:

Giordano - Brodie (world class)
Hanifin - Andersson (which has been great)
Kylington - Hamonic (or whatever works as a 3rd pair)

What Gaudreau needs to do is play more off the puck against teams like this. Give and Goes where his linenates can open him up.

However neither of his linemates are strong enough on the puck for that to be an option. Monahan had a lot of rushes in this game himself and couldn't do anything to open up his linemates, and Lindholm seems to be more of a grinder/finisher than a line driver.

If we could just acquire a Kopitar or Kuznetsov type playmaking center, Gaudreau would have much less pressure to make something out of nothing againdt converging numbers every shift.

Do you think the roster is being optimized at forward as well (based on last games lines)?

The more we play the fantasy coaching game, the more obvious it becomes that the top 4 guys aren't an issue, it's the remaining 8 guys.

It is so hard to put together 6 guys that look decent out there at the same time.

If Ryan wasn't so integral for line 3 is say #### it put him with backlund and tkachuk. He's honestly the best option out of anyone.
