Not all bad behaviour has to be mental illness. Sometimes someone is just a piece of #### person.

In the last few months the Sharks pick up two very dicey players in Kane and now Hoffman. In the short term, there is no doubt that these two players add a lot to San Jose in terms of on-ice talent, but the issues that come with character often happen on a slow burn. This may not be a problem right away, but in the long-term, it's entirely possible that these players will cause such a problem that it might be the beginning of the end for the Sharks as a playoff team.

Thornton might only have a year or so left, Pavelski is already 34, and Burns is coming up right behind him. Those are your leaders on this team (Couture as well who is also 29 already). How many years do those guys have left in charge of this team? What happens in a year or so when they move on due to age, salary restrictions etc.? Do you want a core of Couture, Kane, Hoffman, and Vlasic?

Not to mention that the Sharks were already one of the oldest teams in the league, but these are their players that are 25 and under:

- Tomas Hertl 24
- Timo Meier 22
- Chris Tierney 24
- Barclay Goodrow 25
- Kevin Labanc 23

(so 2 2nd line forwards and 3 bottom 6 forwards)

- Dylan DeMelo 25
- Joakim Ryan 25

(2 borderline NHL defensemen)

They only have 2 decent forward prospects in O'Regan and Norris, and neither project to be top line players. There's nothing else noteworthy in the Sharks system.

Mark my words. This trade is the last gasp at real playoff contention for the Sharks. It's short term thinking and planning, and even if they're good this year (they will be), over the next couple of seasons the Sharks are going to be plummeting into the basement.

TRADE: The #FlaPanthers have acquired forward Mike Hoffman and a 2018 7th round pick from the @SanJoseSharks.

EDIT: And its for picks. Florida's 2019 second round pick, 2018 fourth round pick and 2018 5th round pick.

I think SJ did Ottawa a solid here.

Some people seem to be panicking and talking about the Sharks as suddenly being some sort of powerhouse.

Here's the thing: the Kane deal is a bad contract. The Burns deal is a bad contract. The Vlasic deal is a bad contract. They now have an opportunity to sign Joe Thornton to another bad contract. You sign those deals because "damn the torpedoes, we're going for it right now and if we suck in five years, that's the price you pay". And what do they have to show for it? Well, they have forward depth - guys like Melker Karlsson, Timo Meier, Joonas Donskoi and Marcus Sorensen are solid bottom 6 players who can move up in a pinch. They have solid goaltending. They have solid top to bottom defense. But they have no real elite talent anywhere, besides arguably Burns. And I doubt we'll see Norris Burns again in his career. Their top four forwards are now Pavelski, Couture, Kane and Hoffman. That's not bad, but it's not blowing anyone's mind. There are plenty of teams in better shape there. Their top four D are Burns, Vlasic, and... Braun, I guess? Again, this is fine, but not world-beating - in fact it's arguable that they have the worst blue line in California.

I don't think they're a bad team, I think they're comfortably a playoff team. They're solid, no glaring weaknesses, no clear strengths. They might win the Pacific if only because the Pacific sucks right now. But it's not like they're scary.

It's absolutely amazing that the Sharks could get rid of Boedker without taking salary back. Looks like they'll go hard after Tavares now.

So San Jose does the trade to clear up cap space to go after tavares or Karlson?

2nd+4th+Donaghey for Boedker, Bergman, 6th

That's what it looks like for the Sharks

So sharks clear a bunch of cap. Probably big name hunting now.

A second, fourth and fifth in all likelihood get you 0 NHL players. A 20-30 goal scorer getting traded for a pocketful of wishes, crazy.
