The Curtis Glencross trade tree continues to pay dividends for the Calgary Flames

Trade trees are the best, as a simple move can lead to all kinds of future earth-shattering moves. This comes true with the Calgary Flames and some recent moves, including a blockbuster deal in 2018 that is still churning into future assets today. But, it all started in the 2024–15 season when then GM Brad Treliving decided to move a pending unrestricted free agent as the team was in the midst of a playoff run:

How is the Calgary Flames roster shaping up for 2024-25?

The 2024 trade deadline has come and gone in the National Hockey League and throughout the league, there are two reactions following the grind towards the deadline: “Thank goodness that’s over” and “Now what?”

Let's put 2 more pts up....and do playoffs.
We could win if we play boring road hockey.
I don't know why but I think we'll see a rough and tumble game today. New guys playing with an edge making the difference.

I'll be at this one with my son, who is slowly becoming a hockey fan. In a recent assignment for school, he listed attending a Florida Panthers game as his favorite event ever. If you hear a high pitched "Let's Go Panthers!" over and over again, that's him.

As always, my allegiances are split. I haven't completely given up hope on playoffs for the Flames, but it is going to be pretty unlikely, so a loss doesn't bother me, and the Panthers are already 1st, so I don't really worry about a win today for them either. If either team wins, I'll be happy and sad, for various reasons.

More than anything, I'll be interested/excited to see some of the new guys like Miromanov in the lineup. Now that the TDL has passed, these guys can just play and audition for next year. More often than not, that leads to some very entertaining hockey.

I love trade deadline drama, but it got old for me after a while. Its really nice that things are simple again. The Flames only have one goal: make the playoffs.

Are the Flames having a morning skate? I'm curious if we see Okhotiuk or Hanley on the left side of the 3rd pair.

I'd be excited to see:

Weegar - Andersson
Kylington - Miromanov
Okhotiuk - Pachal

(Nothing against Hanley. I'm just excited to see what the much younger defenceman can do.)

The thing I like as well, is that attitude he and the coaching and leadership.

Yeah, we're shipping out the stars and vets but the pack remains and we still fight.

The work ethic on these kids they're bringing in is nothing short of amazing. They're hungry.

Why wouldn't they be? Conroy is literally removing obstacles in their path to play on the big club and opening spots for them!

Florida really needs to bring back that baby blue RR as a third, then base their home and away jerseys on that template again.

Not only work ethic for these young guys, the team is much faster on all fronts. They get on the forecheck/backcheck faster, transition, everything. I'm sure there will be a drop off at some point, but it is truly exciting to watch this group play, notable difference from Sutter hockey.

I'm going to be at this one, second game this week for me in Florida. I hope the Flames come out as strong as they did in Tampa!

Individuals come and go but the Pack remains.

I don’t even know who plays on the Flames anymore. But I do know they are more fun to watch then they were before.

It’ll be crazy if they make the playoffs.

I think they'd get slaughtered, largely because its a group of enthusiastic kids without a whole helluva lot of Playoff experience.

That being said, I'd prefer they make the Playoffs than miss out by a couple of points.

You dont get playoff experience without playing in the playoffs.

The new D-core is getting thrown into the deep end. Florida is a powerhouse and the Flames are going to need to execute at a really high level to beat them at home. They have shown well in these situations before so you can't count them out but it will be tough.

Really too bad that we don't get to watch Tkachuk and Pospisil go at it.

Great job as always Cheese!

Love that I can just scroll down and open links on a weekend for reading with my coffee.

Did we hear why Gilbert only played 4 minutes in Tampa? Was he hurt? I know that pairing got hemmed in twice in two shifts, but Hanley was elevated and now it looks like Miromanov is taking his spot.

Looked like Gilbert was on the bench, so guessing they don't think he's good enough to play.

Likely won't be re-signed if that's the case.

Calgary blueline is certainly pretty full when it comes to 5-8 level defensemen.

I've always liked Gilbert, but yeah these recent additions certainly make it look like he won't be involved beyond this season.
