Trading for a guy like Markstrom could have still given them a legit chance of making it, plus they'd have him for 2 more years. It did make sense for both teams for them to figure something out now, or a month ago. And there's no guarantee the Devils will even get a decent starter in the summer. So next year they could be stuck with more backups hoping someone steps up. Tough way to go for a team that looked good on paper (except in net) and should be trending upwards.

Windows can be very short nowadays. You get the best bang for your buck while you still have important pieces on their ELCs. The Devils are about to lose that advantage. Bad goaltending prevented them from using it effectively.
