Police Investigate Graffiti on Chinese Consulate
Quote:
We are investigating graffiti sprayed last night on the wall of the Chinese Consulate-General building as a possible hate-motivated crime.
Three people dressed in black and wearing masks walked up to the building around 3:30 a.m., on Wednesday, May 27, 2020. They spray-painted vulgar phrases referencing COVID-19 along the north wall of the building and left.
It is the second time in just over a week that the building has been targeted, with another graffiti message being spray-painted on the sidewalk in front of the building on Tuesday, May 19, 2020. That message did not reference COVID-19.

China hate is on the rise in Canada. People are getting riled up. It's a concerning trend to see growing.

As long as people can delineate between Chinese people and the Chinese state, but they probably can't.

What bothers me is that its one thing to get riled up over the politics of the Chinese government. But it's completely another to get riled up over ethnic Chinese folks in general. There seems to be a rise in incidents across the country lately (and abroad too).
And lots of Canadians can't seem to distinguish the two. An extremely concerning trend.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that anyone who thinks it's a reasonable course of action to spraypaint graffiti all over a consulate definitely can't.
Also, if you're pissed enough about being stuck inside that you feel the need to deface the embassy, but you weren't pissed enough to do it in response to China's (ongoing) treatment of the Uighurs, that doesn't really suggest to me that you're the hero of this story.

Being critical of a nation or that nation's policies isn't a hate crime, but the people motivated to do something like this probably aren't discerning enough to make distinctions between a country and people who look like they come from there. Hate crimes against Asian people do seem to be on the rise. I believe CBC reported they are up 4x year over year in Vancouver.

It’s legitimate to protest symbols of PRC power(such as an embassy or consulate), that is seperate from attacking Chinese citizens of Canada. The same way we can criticize Russia but not spread hate upon our fellow Russians residing in Canada.
To me this is even more clear because many ethnic Chinese in Canada have never even set foot in the PRC. As well as native Canadians born here, most 1st generation immigrants are from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other Chinese minorities from places like Malaysia.

These idiots play right into the CCP's hand though. You can bet China will turn incidents like these into propaganda to show how the west hates them, causing the general populace to further rally around the government
