I’m not sure if it’s just a tactic. I think it’s an honest statement even from previous players (for the most part). I take it as “I want to stay but I know what I’m worth. If the flames are willing to give me the contract I want to stay then I’ll sign.” Lindholm is an example where the flames offered him a more than fair contract but he wanted more in order to stay. That could happen with Andersson.

The flames may think him wanting to stay means he will accept a deal for $8 million AAV but Andersson’s number might be $9 million AAV. It comes down to if the flames want to overpay to keep him or do they only want to keep him if he’s willing to sign a “fair” contract (i.e. one that would be similar in AAV to what he would get on the open market but with an additional year).

I think the players see the circus that ensues when they answer questions authentically and have decided to just stick to the script.

He's not giving a hometown discount, because he already did. The Flames owe him a market value contract and that's what he'll demand.

The longer this goes on the more it works in his favour and his agent will be telling him that - if this goes to the 2026 deadline then I think it was handled wrong. GMCC needs to sign him to an extension this summer or trade him before the season starts IMO. That's going to be at least $8M * 8 years. I hate that contract already, and want another team to make that mistake.

So, it would be ideal if a team offers what GMCC is asking for and we deal with it this season.

I really hope the usual craziness accompanies the trade deadline and a couple teams decide they really need Ras.

This trade deadline would be ideal but I'm pretty sure that won't happen. Just don't see the Flames being bold like that. Next best time is this off season. Definitely don't wait until next year's deadline. You'll likely get rinsed like you did with Hanifin.

If we're in the mix for a playoff spot at the trade deadline, keeping Andersson is a self rental

He can be moved at the draft or at the next trade deadline, or possibly he is walked to free agency as a self rental again next year

I trust GMCC to make short term decisions with an eye on the long term.

You want full-term? That has value. You want massive trade control? That has value. So that AAV has to come down or that trade control has to be altered.

You want more money? You have to sacrifice some Trade Control.

Give and take. Not like Treliving handing out Trade Control like those nickel candies in those stupid globe dispensing machines that have been there since the Nixon administration.
I would expect an Andersson extension to have a NTC/NMC for the first 3-4 years and then drop to a 10 team list after that. Similar to the Kadri contract.

That seems pretty standard for players that are signing contracts that take them across the magical 35yo line. It gives the player confidence that they won't get moved in those first few years that are likely still prime years and also gives the team a release valve in the later years when player performance may start dropping or the team strategy may need to change.

Also, the limited NTC years ensure that the player is not getting salary dumped into a team/city that they have no interest in.

I think you're under valuing that unprotected first in the 2026 draft.
Vegas is becoming a very old team, anything is possible with that pick.

I am sure that it is not a mystery between the Flames and Andersson what the number will wind up being. They can't extend him until next off season, so neither party is in a hurry.
