Outside of the last handful of games they've been very good in their own end. That is a positive that they need to carry forward through the remainder of the season and make a part of their identity.

Just cut out the random 2 on 0s. Please Jesus.

Hard working win. Absolutely stoked for BSD.

Agree that we should keep Bennett up there. Even if all he does is go to the net with those two, he'll pot a few rebounds. It was clear from his interview that's where he wants to be too.

Tkachuk probably heard whatever he was referring to from Marner. As someone else said, Andersen not being injured sounds reasonable but it could have just been something related to the Muzzin incident too.

Bonus Monday night Yanet for the win.

The Leafs allowed 33 shots, and I don't see you criticizing them. Gee, I thought advanced stats were supposed to go beyond simple SOG totals.

When leading on the scoreboard all the way through? Gee, I thought score effects were something advanced stats were supposed to take into account.

If this is the "best" game the team can muster together under ward, that is far from encouraging.
Against the #1 team in the league so far? Gee, I thought quality of competition was something advanced stats were supposed to take into account.

Advanced stats mean quite a bit. Pulling numbers out one's arse, like the above, has nothing to do with advanced stats and doesn't mean a damned thing.

I agree with your sentiment but it was actuallly the apologists who brought it into this thread first by calling out all the missing regular posters tonight.

It happens both ways. Some posters only show up after wins, some only after losses.
There wasn't any need to bring the coaching debate into a happy PGT at all.

Was Leivo benched? He took a bad penalty and didn't play much after that. Also Godwin with just over 2 minutes ice time. 3rd pairing also didn't see much time on the ice.

And Ward’s systems are what they are - funny how execution matters.
Execution is a funny thing though in that it’s a fine line and sometimes what can be seen as execution are just a couple bounces.

They got a decent break on the Bennett goal, get a couple on the PP, got some big saves (and Toronto hit 3 posts), and a game that maybe isn’t a win on another night looks great with a 3-0 shutout.

I didn’t get to watch much of the game live (just catching up now) but just reading the game thread and looking at the box score and it looks like some of the same issues were still there.

- Still gave up a fair bit in their own zone getting hemmed in a lot
- Still didn’t generate very much offence at all 5v5

Biggest difference tonight is the special teams were good and the goalie pitched a shutout (which is impressive on 3.5 expected goals against).

But that’s the big thing with this system IMO, the margin for error is so slim even when they execute within the structure (which does look like they did tonight so far).

They invite a lot of pressure in their own zone (while limiting high danger), and they don’t take many risks to generate offence at 5v5, so if your goaltending is just okay or your PP had a bad night, then it can be tough to generate the offence needed to win. And if your goaltending is bad then it can end up on a night like we saw Saturday.

I prefer winning to losing. They should win more often that’s more fun.

Also, the best PP in the league went 0/7.

Great PK and Rittich was a rock. That was paramount in winning.

Nice to see Monahan and Gaudreau deployed for just 1 defensive zone faceoff all game, up 3-0 with 1:05 left.

No surprise that when deployed appropriately, in a position where they have to defend as little as possible, they have decent games. Sheltering them works so keep it up!

Robert is calling in now on Fan960. He was not happy with the team game tonight. (Wut?) Didn't like the TO odd man rushes once we were up 1-0.

Important win for sure after that Oilers game.

I guess we'll just have to keep our collective fingers crossed that they can turn the page and play that way consistently.

Happy for Rittich; Hope he gets some more starts as you don't want to burn out Markstromm if you don't have to
